Line Recommendation DD Cranks

Featured Replies

Here's my setup, just curious what line and test / line diameter you would spool your reel with.

Rod, 7'6" Glass Rod, Reel Shimano Bantam Mdl 5.1, fishing mostly Missouri lakes which means you're not tangling with double digit sized bass.

The rod will be a dedicated cranking rod, mostly for 5-10 Xd's, magnum squarebills, etc. So we're talking 1/2 oz up to 2oz baits. What line are you using?

I have an Edge FS 806 with a 5 speed concept A I use for large deep divers.  I run either 10lb pline cxx or 15lb pline tactical.  Both are about .014".

As a side note, pick up a few Azuma Z boss DD's.....they may replace your XD's.

I use sunline fc crank 14 lb for deep divers, and have solid success.

Deep Diving crank baits require long repetitive casting. The longer the cast let’s the deep divers get down and stay a few more yards in the strike zone. Your line takes a beating from casting forces and snags etc.

IMO FC line is a poor choice do to the fact it’s prone to stress failures. The advantage may be it’s smaller diameter then most mono/Copolymer line per pound test and lower coefficient of line drag. Down side is cost to re spool often.

Today we have high strength small diameter excellent casting Nylon line Sunline Defier Armillo. 13#/.012D Armillo is ideal for deep divers 3/4 to 2 oz.

I prefer braid.  30-40# depending on how it digs into the spool.  With a deep diver, you'll get down deeper with a thinner line diameter.  Floating or sinking line doesn't really matter for depth, as it's all about bill geometry.  And you'll likely be throwing further out than normal to allow time for it to get down deeper.  So if you have a lot of FC or Mono out, it can be hard to set the hook with all of that stretch if you get a bite early on in the cast.  I've lost quite a few fish due to that before switching over to braid.  I pair it with a moderate action rod to give me some flex to keep the fish pinned to make up for the lack of stretch close up.

For shallow to mid depth cranks, I go with mono or FC.  But once you hit around 15ft., I prefer braid.
