The Best Advice

As a kid, we had a neighbor that fished a local lake for bass. Mr. Calloway always seemed to bring home some fish, which he kept and cleaned.                                              He pulled into his driveway after a fishing trip, on a hot summer day. Dad and I were mowing, and working in the yard.                          Dad shut the mower off, and we walked over to talk to him. He lifted a cooler out of the back of his station wagon, that had several two pound bass, and one that was bigger.                                        Of course we asked him what he caught them on. Al these years later, I still remember what he said.                   " I caught these bass on a purple plastic worm, and a purple Beetle Spin. I'll tell you guys, these Missouri bass love the color purple, they really go for it.".                                 This has been the single best fishing advice I've ever had. I've had the very best results with the color purple, with soft plastic baits, jig trailers etc.                                        There was nothing scientific about this advice. Just words of wisdom from an experienced fisherman.               Sometimes, this type of advice is the best.                             What's the best fishing advice you've ever received?

Interesting yours is about a color. I’ll keep that purple thing in mind ?. Here are a few pieces of advice I’ve found most helpful. I can’t possibly only pick one.

- KISS

- Location is #1, timing is #2

- Reel spinnerbaits slower (Just sayin what works for me)

- Don’t beat the bank

Excellent subject!

Color wise.. June bug will out fish anything else down here.

Stay home after a winter cold front for a day but always go 1-2 days before.

Learn the finer points of punching and sight/bed fishing.
It’s not as simple as it sounds

Purple is a thing. My favorite advice is "I don't have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you"...

Old Indian saying, “Keepum bait in water”.

My Grandpa always told me that when I go fishing, the sucker is on the wrong end of the pole. ? At the time I thought he was kidding. Now when I look at all the tackle and gear I own, I believe the old man was correct. God I miss that man.

Best advice, DON'T LEAVE FISH TO FIND FISH!!!

Throw a jig like your trying to hang it up...that's where the bass live. In conjunction with that...worry about getting them on then worry about getting them out.

I think purple is the universal soft plastic color. Light enough for clear water, dark enough for dingy water. I have good success with anything from grape to black/blue.

Don't bother fishing in an east wind.

Fish dark baits in stain water.

Spinnerbaits in the wind.

Bass are unpredictable.

PB&J is my 2nd favorite color Senko.

The best piece of advice I can give is fish with your Wife, if you are fortunate she will be your best friend as well. Another good advice is to do your best to learn from each fishing trip, since this is the best way to learn how to fish.

Can’t catch’em if your lines not in the water.

Join the best bass club you can find.  Fish as a non boater.  Keep your mouth shut and watch what others do.  Don't talk about yourself.  Be kind and friendly, but don't tell others how or where to fish.  The worse thing you can do is think you know it all.

The early bird gets the worm so go fishing early rule of thumb. My favorite colors are grape, junebug and blue fleck.

This is the best one so far...and it doesn't just apply to fishing its pretty universal on how to get better at anything. My buddy Brian always asks: why are you always catching more bass than me? This is the answer. I've seen way more scenarios, have better problem solving skills because of it and alot more tools in the tool box.

The ability to Improvise, Overcome and Adapt consistently on the water cannot be understated.

That's fantastic advice.

I joined my first bass club in 1969.  Fished my first tournament shortly thereafter.  Everything I learned about bass fishing, I learned from someone who was trying to out fish me.  Competition is the best teacher.
