Outboard on a two man plastic boat?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Been thinking about the little two man boats, I see that some have ratings for outboards. Has anybody put an outboard on one?

Yes, I did. I put a 5hp on a Bantam 3x. It kept on getting swamped with water coming over the front with every little wave it hit. Needless to say, I just stuck with electric after that day.

Stuck a 3hp Gamefisher ob on a 10' Pelican.  Still slow...but beats paddling or TM.

I put a 5hp on a 10ft bps pond prowler.  Kept taking water over the bow at anything faster than idle.

put a 225 pro xs on a pond prowler and it hauled a$$  :)

Had a 5 HP Johnson on my 10' Buster and it worked fine. I think everyone in the Mini-Boat group I was in at the time had an outboard on their boat.

Only time we ever took on water was when some idiot in a ski boat wasn't paying attention and swamped us.

Put a five HP on the back of mine. Cracked the transom on both sides. Not made for that kind of stress. My advice -- Don't do it!

Most all boats of that size...my Pelican Bass Raider 10E included call for no more than 3.5 HP.  I saw a guy on the Ohio river the other day in the same boat with a 3HP and he did fine.  Scooted pretty well and did fine with all the coal barges that went by him.
