Baitcaster Braid Capacity

Featured Replies

When a Baitcasting reel states Braid capacity to be 50lb at 110 yards, is there any problem or issues with using a 65lb braid besides losing some yards on the spool?

Not at all - you could put 80#, 100#, whatever on it...just lose capacity is all.

You can even go the reverse and put lighter braid on it if you wanted.

Capacity - whether it's mono or braid - is just giving you an indication of the size of the spool. You can calculate what a line not stated will take up using this tool

Nope, but you could gain some street rep for doing that. It's like putting a Daiwa reel on a Shimano rod. Wild......

Reel line capacity is subjective based on line diameter not line strength. The reel mfr’s use lb test because users don’t the line diameter they use.

Stating 110 yards of 50 braid or 14 lb Mono makes the assumption the line is .014 diameter and fully filled.

If the 65 lb braid is .014 D the reel holds the same 110 yards of line.

My BCs hold 4" of 3/8 three strand, so no problems with backlashes...

The baitcaster cops will come and write you a ticket. I believe the penalty is 15 yards. 1st down.
