Just bought a Shimano Miravel 2500 reel. Looking to match it up with a Dobyn's Fury rod. What do you guys think?

Fury will be a nice stick but I hear they're better for crankbaits than for bottom contact.

I just prefer stC even with the heavy tip

As much as I love Dobyns casting rods, I’m not the biggest fan of the handle on the spinning ones. If you have 2 fingers behind the reel stem, they are fine and the 703sf Fury would be a nice rod. However, if you hold your rod with your pinky behind the reel stem or your whole hand above the reel, I’d recommend the old St. Croix Mojo Bass rods. I’d get the 7’1” medium fast, and you can get them for the price of a Fury. 

I have Furies, but not my first choice for a bottom contact rod. They excel at other things, but for a mid priced spinning rod, the Fenwick Elites are my favorite. I have a couple and they’re really nice sticks. Fenwick seems to fly under the radar, but every Fenwick I’ve owned I’ve loved, and the best rod I have is a Fenwick even though it’s far from my most expensive. They have rods of all price points and I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them.

I paired my Miravel 2500 with a Curado rod.  It makes a great outfit.

Hey guys, I really appreciate the info passed on so far.  My problem with the Dobyns rods is I won't be able to put it in my hand before I order it.  A fishing friend of mine told me to never buy a spinning rod without first holding it to feel the finger location and grip.  I have held one of the St Croix Mojo rods and like it.  Anyone else out there with a recommendation, your info is really appreciated.  Thanks again guys.

Which brands and models are available to you locally? Call around or search the store's web pages, list them here, and you might get feedback specific to those models.

@Shadow1 Although I’ve not fished with a fury I’ve handled them a few times in store and feel the 13 fishing lineup is a little better value for the price. Just my opinion of course.

I agree with the comments on the Fury spinning rods. I have a bunch of Dobyns casting rods from various levels ranging from Fury to Champion Extreme, but not a single Dobyns spinning rod. The reason is exactly what PBBrandon said above.

 

I will add the Fenwick HMG to the mix as well as Daiwa Tatula models that have the larger foregrip. Both are fairly common in shops and may be available near you to try.

You can only match a Shimano reel to a Shimano rod. 

I got a 702 Fury spinning rod. My 703 spinning rod is a Sierra and call me crazy, but I like the Fury more. It’s a sweet rod. 

I really like Dobyns blanks and intricate power/actions.  I just really dislike the lack of a foregrip.  IMO the best rod Ive used that closest that price point is probably the Tatula.  Way more comfortable and more versatile IMO.  Balance wise theyre both great, with Tatula feeling the lighter of the 2. 

If you want to fish light neds and DS then the 7'1 ML is ideal.  The 7' M F is more of an all around versatile spinning rod.  It will handle plastics like wacky rigs and weigtless t rigs a little better, but still is plenty light enough for more finesse techniques.
