I know prespawn is approaching here in NC, but I have no clue what to use.  I think I've been getting bites on a weightless texas-rigged bandito bug (Alabama craw pattern), but if I am, I'm not pinning them.  I plan on going out this Wednesday, when it's supposed to be cloudy and 75 degrees, a few days after a rain storm and right before another one.  Temps have been mid-50s to high-60s.  Water is a brownish green, somewhere between murky and stained.  Lemme know what works for all you guys so I can go out and buy it today.  Thanks!

I typically let the conditions dictate my lure choice regardless of the season.

 

Bass use structure near spawning banks to stage and feed up before laying their eggs.

A Damiki Rig & FFS or you'll never get bit!

They are hungry and aggressive in prespawn period. Should be super easy.    UNLESS     

 

They have already been hooked & released several times already.

any specific colors?  Brands?  I know the wind's supposed to be 20-30 mph tomorrow, so that'll probably affect it some

Jigs - Jerkbaits - Spinnerbaits - Square bills - T-rig Zoom lizards.

I’d say typical bass presentations, but under 8’ of water. 

Jigs, swim jigs, spinner baits, chatterbaits, swim baits, square bills/flatsides.

Alabama Rig

Prespawn to me means water temps near 50°F

That's when crawfish get active.

I'm throwing a craw/sculpin jig 

Siebert makes great jigs

 

I like Zoom, Berkley, Z Man, Missile Baits, Strike King, Bizz Baits, Reaction Innovations, Big Bite Baits, Culprit, Storm, Keitech and Netbait soft plastics.

 

I fish Bill Lewis, Googan, 6th Sense, Berkley, Strike King and Rapala hard baits mostly.

 

Spinnerbaits I get from Nichols, Luck E Strike, Booyah, Siebert, Stanley and War Eagle.

 

Hard to beat an original chatterbait for bladed jigs but I also like the Berkley slobberknocker and the Fogy by Siebert.

 

You'll have to play around to find out what you like but I'll say this: no bait is better than any other bait.  They all have their times.

In order for the most part

 

Megabass 110 and 110 jr+1

Alabama Rig 

Finesse Jig in shallow water, football jig deep - something with red or orange

Crankbait 6-8ft - OSP Evoke 2.0 

Spinnerbait - OSP High Pitcher 

Chatterbait - Fire Craw with matching Spunk Shad trailer

5in Wacky Senko - when nothing else is working

 

Any small BFS lure will work this time of year as well. Sometimes sizing down works on a busy body of water.  If water is murky go with something bright 

I like floating  minnow twitch baits like the Long A . Spinnerbait  . Wiggle Warts in the afternoon on steep sunny banks.

I'm in Louisiana so take this for what it's worth.

 

For pre-dawn fish say in 1 to 4 foot of water, with water temps of 60 degrees are higher, it's very very hard to beat a 4 to 3 inch swimabit rigged on a owner flasher swimmer hook.

 

If fishing around grass and wood, can be fished with braided line to keep from breaking off fish.

 

Water color dictates what color blade, dirty water calls for a gold Colorado style blade and clear water a chrome willow leaf blade can work well.

 

Babybass, watermelon red, any kind of shad color with or without some spark flakes, pearl with some chartreuse die on the tail, many many different colors to try. Match it up to water clarity and availability sunlight and if possible match it to natural bait fish in your area.

 

Small sqaurbill cranks like the kvd 1.0 in waterever color closely matches the bait fish in your area, works great on stagged up prespawn,spawn and post spawn fish.

 

Last but not least the good ole baby ribbet frog, can be amazing in the prespawn time frame if your water temps are in the 65 to 70 degree range.

I am just excited for glide bait season, i.e. prespawn. I will go out all day throwing glides in the spring for that 1 bite. Sure, throw a spinnerbait for numbers but I just want that one. The right bite.
