Been thinking about maybe doing a move near there for many years, family's wanted to go there for decades so i think it might be the time depending on different properties for sale.

They obviously have the world famous Salmon River, id sure like to fish it alot for the seasonal salmon, steelheads, and brown trout too, but as someone who likes fishing for bass more than any other fish species im curious about the bass fishing up there, i dont have a preference of large or smallmouth.

I know theres the Salmon River Reservoir (Redfield), Lower Reservoir (Altmar), Kasoag Lake, North Sandy and South pond (Sandy Creek), along with the estuary, and Ontario/Oneida being nearby as well. Along with hundreds of smaller ponds.

So if anyone who has been up there or lives nearby can comment on those areas or even the surrounding ones id greatly appreciate it!

Id also be willing to make the trip to Onondaga in Syracuse from time to time if i make the move.

Oswego river for salmon, St. Lawrence for smallmouth. I’ve caught plenty of salmon in the Oswego near the power plant but I’m not fund  of the current. Good luck on your new chapter of life with your move.

The fishing up here is incredible. There is no shortage of good fisheries... some well known, and some not.

If you decide to move up here, let me know and we can fish together sometime.

When is a good time to go for salmon on the Oswego river? I usually target bass, I am clueless when it comes to salmon.

We always fished it in the fall by the power plant. You definitely want to wear a PFD.  The fishing is great there but be aware when the sirens are sounded and the lights start flashing leave the water. It no joke. When they open the gates the water will rise fast and the current gets strong.

As have I... but you're right to fear the current. I waded across the river in a shallow area when the water was low so I could fish the far side of the dam. Did great, caught lots of salmon... BUT, as I was walking back across the river, they opened the dam and I was swept off my feet and headed out towards the lake with my waders full of water. Not fun.

Fortunately, I was able to work my way towards shore and someone pulled me out. Needless to say, I haven't fished up there since.

To answer the OP's question, most of my bass fishing experience is in the various bays off of Lake Ontario. It's an absolutely beautiful place to live.

Usually people start targeting salmon in the various rivers in the fall. Sept/Oct.

But, if you have a big enough boat and know where to go, you can catch them in the lake (meaning Lake Ontario) all year long.
