Recurve1 Posted August 6, 2024 Posted August 6, 2024 I fish the plopper in size 60 and 75 for smallmouth and while it works I'd like to go single hook, at least the back hook. I'm concerned about size cause this is where the propeller spins. Has anyone done this replacement and if so what size single hook did you use? Thanks Quote
Solution Peacedivision Posted August 6, 2024 Solution Posted August 6, 2024 I actually did this recently to fish in a private pond where I wanted to be extra nice to the fish. Didn't actually help me get any bites on the plopper but I ran single inlines on a size 60, plus on a rico popper and zara puppy. I bought a range of sizes in the owner single inline since they were pretty cheap $3.50 a pack I think and just sized them to match one point of the factory trebles. Spook and popper were highly effective, still haven't caught a plopper fish 3 1 Quote
Recurve1 Posted August 6, 2024 Author Posted August 6, 2024 Thanks a ton Peace, this is exactly what I was hoping for. I will get some size 2 and also some #1 to try on the plopper 75 size. The plopper has been my go to top water for smallmouth in the local rivers/creeks and it is working pretty well. I saw a YT video where they also are using Mustad Kaiju in line hooks. will try them and the Owner. 1 Quote

I had to go back and double check myself since I never fish these dang ploppers haha. my first post is a 75 not a 60, so size 2 for the 75. Even size 4 looks too big for the 60 so probably size 6 in the owner inline. 2 Quote

Going by the chart, you might think the online book is too big. It isn’t. The gap between the inline hook should match the gap between any two of the trebles hook points 4 Quote
Brian11719 Posted August 6, 2024 Posted August 6, 2024 I like the owner x strong hooks in a size 1 but I also like the choppo 90 or 105 so I think the ones I throw might be a little bigger. But that said I've also found I like a slightly larger single hook to replace a treble so I usually look at that chart they have and then go up a size. 1 Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted August 7, 2024 Super User Posted August 7, 2024 Some handy info here https://www.saltstrong.com/articles/how-to-replace-treble-hooks/ 1 Quote
Recurve1 Posted August 8, 2024 Author Posted August 8, 2024 Thanks to all - the replacement in line hooks cannot get here too soon - this morning I got a plopper 60 treble in my thumb unhooking a wiggly smallmouth. fortunately superficial but it was quite a time unhooking the back hook with the front hook in my thumb. able to push it thru and smash the barb. backed out ok after that. 1 Quote
Bazoo Posted August 8, 2024 Posted August 8, 2024 No offense meant; if you’re hooking yourself then you need to add some other landing/unhooking techniques to your skillset. Grab the fish underbelly before lipping, or grab them by the body after of the gill plate. Unhook with pliers. I say this, and so this but I don’t do this exclusively. I do this when the fish is wild. When they are more docile... and I think I can safely do it, I lip and unhook per the traditional version. Quote
