Maybe I need to fish one but the Mojo grip off the shelf just didn't feel right to me. I have said this about other rods, like Megabass P5 Spinning but once I put a reel on one and fished it, I only wanted another one.

In general,  I don't like the direction St. Croix is going.  It's not that I like or dislike their new designs.  It's just that they do traditional rods so well and some of the new stuff is a far departure from that. Also, the newer rods seem downgraded from older models, with exception of the Legend Tournament.  It will be interesting to see where they go next.

I get that the new space ship grips are goofy looking but let's not pretend that the last model wasn't a weird looking stick.

Cosmetics are in the eye of the beholder and for me personally are secondary to any rod choice I make. I do personally like the cosmetics of the mojo's, including the new trigon model.  But cosmetics do not catch fish.

I LOVE the fat grips on the previous gen mojo's.  Insanely comfortable to fish all day without fatigue.  You can keep your slender, skinny grips.  Those make my hands hurt.

Thanks for the responses and I like all the comments. I have my share of SC rods, of different series, spinning and casting models.
The Victory Series is one I’m starting to like. I’m in touch with the longer forend now but did take some fishing to get use to it. For next season I want get the 6’10” ML spin. I recently touched it for the first time and felt good to me. But this is in a shop with no reel and no water. I think I can get this rod to try before I buy.
I like to try new and different things. Most times it works out great. But my all time favorites SC’s are the Premiere and Avids Series. Many life long good times fishing River Smallies with them.
I'm a bit old school and a creature of habit. Maybe I’m not receptive to change but change is necessary, as a company they are trying to stay in the market place and satisfy the masses.
Their products produced in Mexico are good rods but I don’t think price is all that well passed on to the buyer. Thats just an opinion, I don’t know if it can be better priced or not. I believe rods sold and produced in Mexico, out number the US made rods.
I’d like to know this. But I won’t talk ill about SC, they put out a good product and stand behind it. Over all the years and all the rods I’ve only had to deal with service twice. Once a rod breakage once a loose tip. Both were taken care of pretty timely.

bah…. Just something to secure the Reels to the rod… reel seats are just reel seats…

:)

maybe so but some of the cheaper ones either break after awhile or don't secure most reels down securely or are just plain uncomfortable. to me, its a key feature of the rod.

There is no one perfect grip for all. No two hands are the same. No manufacturers are the same. But it has to be comfortable. If it’s not good to the feel in the shop, it certainly won’t on the water. Put a reel on it before you buy it. Maybe your buddy can lend you his to try before you buy. These rods most of us use are not $25 Wally World combos where that if it doesn’t work out the way you expect, you hand it off to some kid at the dock with a cane pole. I know that’s sounds pretty extreme but I’m not buying a particular Victory than take it out and not like it. I can’t do that.
I can certainly understand where you guys are coming from in regards to the MOJO rods. I feel 100% as strongly as to what they did to the Trout Series of rods. I’ve fished Loomis rods for trout my whole adult life. I wanted to try a SC Trout, I really like it. But can’t say I like the new Trout Series. Didn’t buy it. Handle and seat were not comfortable.

Ya Loomis makes some fantastic trout rods, they always have.

Not sure what SC was thinking with the reel seat on their trout rod, its a barrel of hard plastic..ugh.

STRONGLY disagree with this. Reel seats can make or break (not literally 🙂) a rod.

Real nice. I’ve landed a few stripers over the years on the Delaware River but nowhere near that nice. I like that big wide bow to your boat. What kind is that? How many h.p. do you use to push it? Have fun with them and good luck. I've never set out to stripper fish. They were all surprise catches while smallie fishing. 👍🏻

I've used SC rods almost exclusively for 25 years.  Recently I bought a few G. Loomis and Shimano rods that I heard were very good.  Like others have said I'm a little disappointed in the direction SC is going but hopefully the right themselves before it's too late.  I visit their Park Falls factory every October and have always been pleased with their CS department.  I feel a certain amount of pride fishing with an American made rod (incl. G. Loomis) and supporting American workers.  I wish Shimano or Daiwa had a factory in the USA or even N. America.

I handled a Trigon handle spinning rod in store and several Daiwa and Shimano reels squirmed in the reel seat. That's a deal killer for me.

Unfortunately man of them are. eg. When they redid the Avids they downgraded the guides..and the guides on the Avid panfish and walleye rods are just steel..big downgrade from the alconites that were used on the original avids.

You are correct. The Avid series is probably the favorite of my St. Croix rods. But I’m fishing some older stuff. There use to be a time when Avid rods were available in 5’9”, 6’3”, 6’8”, 6’9” w/x fast tapers. Now they are on 6” length differences and fast is all that is available. But I could be wrong.
I still have most of my Premiere Series Rods. I think i bought my first one in 1980-1981. I thought I was the cat’s meow river fishing for smallies with that. I have a few of those Premieres and break them out now and then.
If they (SC) handle warranty issues well I guess you can’t go wrong. It looks like they are trying to put out rods or all budgets.
I'm a St. Croix fan. I like what they put out. But with that said they are not the end all do all of rods. Lots of good stuff out there and plenty to choose from. I fish with a few different things. I think for new anglers or anglers trying to step up your game don’t stop at St. Croix. Go out at look at and touch a bunch of different rods. If you think you are interested in up grading to a Megabass, Loomis or St. Croix maybe a buddy will let you fish his.
BPS, Cabela’s, Fenwick, ABU all put out good stuff.

For me, I have owned both and the new handle doesn't bother me in the least. I liked the old one too. The only issue I have noticed is that the locking nut for holding the reel on seems to loosen up too easily and I find myself checking it quite a bit.
