Dumb line storage on rod question..

Featured Replies

I dunno, since i've retired and do a lot more fishing I have come to notice that when I grab a rod from my locker that has something already tied onto it, that the line at the tip will have a bend/wave to it. I assume since its it tight from the lure/hook being attached to the keeper is what is causing it. I try not to place to much pressure when connecting to the keeper but I am noticing it more and more. Probably not something I paid much attention to in the past but kind of bugs me. It's clear to see and feel in the line where it is and while not a kink I'd prefer to try to minimize it as much as possible, anyone notice this or is it just me? If so what have you done to minimize it?

Thanks

I sometimes leave a lure tied on when stored, but I haven't noticed that. I change my line pretty regularly though if I'm using a rig. I like fresh line.

Yeah I pretty much run braid to leader on all my setups and replace the leader pretty frequently. Most of my leaders if not all are mono, just something I have started noticing, not sure it weakens the line but its still there and bugs me since you can see and feel it.

@bishoptf I see it too, but it seems less severe if I hook into my reel handle, thumb a disengaged spool, wrap my line 3-4 times around the rod and last guide or two, then engage my spool.  Maybe you're already doing it this way, but if not it might help.  I'm also braid to leader on everything, and run 15-25' leaders.

You’re right, you have the line too tight after connecting the terminal end to the keeper.

It has nothing to do with using a leader or not. The line is just pulled too tight bending the tip down.

Just pull a few inches of line off the spool, connect to the keeper, turn the handle to pull it taut then wrap the line 2 times around the rod.

Yeah I just never have really noticed it in the past, I am trying to do what you have stated, but with some lures/weights its to lose. Will keep playing with it until I can figure it out....

Thats where wrapping it around the rod a few times will help. (I do it on everything)
Even with a 1 1/oz weight on my big stick I don’t have that problem anymore.

The only thing is by wrapping with a big weight it can rub on the rod, but using a rod cover with keep it all together

I always keep mine pretty loose. I've never heard of wrapping the line around your rod before. Could yall give me a quick rundown on how to do that, plus the benefits?

I just cut off the lure, put a line clip at the end and reel up semi taunt before putting the sock on. No kinks, no tangled lines.

This is something I have pondered much on. I have noticed it for years and have been trying my best to minimize. I have found that no matter how "loose" you leave your bait on the keeper, it inevitably tightens up through travel, transport, ect. @Mike L method sounds interesting, I will play around with that.

The good news is I don't think it has ever resulted in a breakoff. I even have a couple reels spooled with floro.

I do retie often. Like @MN Fisher I have the line clips. They are awesome between trips, and for the off-season.

I have lures tied on all season.. Never notice any issues with line kinks or breakage in all my years doing so..

With the reel engaged grab the line from the tip to the keeper, using your other hand just spin the rod around a few times.
Thats it

The benefit is the cure of what the OP asked about by keeping the line up against the rod in one tight package.
It keeps the rod straight when stored and cures the terminal end from loosing and falling off the keeper without undo pressure.

Thanks Mike. I’ll have to give this a try. When bank fishing, one of the irritating things is that when your walking along one of your lures will come in son and entangle 2-3 others. Sounds like it might just be the cure.
