Jig heads.

Featured Replies

When reading a basspro catalog lately there are jig heads for everything.  What on earth are they all for?

Haven’t looked at BPS catalog since they bought Cabela’s!

Try looking at Barlow catalog if you want to see jig heads!

To answer the question , they are to sell tackle. I personally use a 5/16 ball head , a 1/16 mushroom head , a 3/16 tube jig and 1/8 oz ball head and mushroom head . I have no use for anything more.......

Different jig heads shine under certain conditions/circumstances. Pointy heads are great for swimming, a football is hard to beat for a bottom presentation, a shakey, stand up, head is perfect for enticing bottom dwelling fish that aren't active and an Arkie head is a good style for flipping/pitching and can double as a swim jig, or just dragging it along the bottom.  Then there's tube jigs, ball head, dart head, underspins..........................

Fishing different baits, depths, and types of cover.

I only make baits for myself and fishing partners.  I just counted and have 19 molds.  I basically just use football, Troker swim jig, Midwest finesse and minnow head.  Some of mine haven’t been used in years.

Each to his own idea of what type of jig head is ideal for their use.

There are hundreds of jig head designs each thought to optimized for a specific use. New designs emerge each year a never ending evolution of jig heads.

I designed my Viper head jig back in ‘71 and it’s still unique never copied, perfect for my use!

Before the ned rig got big there were limited options for high quality smaller heads.  The sucess of the ned rig increased demand for smaller hooked lighter heads and which saw an increase in price.  Recently the popularity of strolling smaller baits in concert with FFS has flooded the market with endless options of small 90* eyes heads that demand a premium as far as price goes.

I use heads that vary quite in a bit in weight and style inshore and surf fishing.  The weight and style of head depends on the artificial, depth, tide and technique.  Its nice to see quality heads available for any scenario you can imagine, but $3-$4 per head adds up fast when you need pretty much every size from 1/8 to 1/2 in multiple hook sizes and head styles.
