I bought monofilament!!

wow.  how many types are there?!!  I ended up giving up and ordering Sufix Advance in 25lb.  I think I need the stretch!!  fluorocarbon cannot take the hard sudden shock attacks of big ocean fish.   I lost my dream fish yesterday...if you listen carefully, you can still hear my "noooooooooo" echoing thru the west.  hahah..

I know very little about Mono-line, and just went with a brand I frequent in other lines...

very excited to try it out.   felt compelled to post this since I am a staunch advocate of anything but Mono.  :D.

I tried a filler spool of Suffix Advance Monofilament in 10 pound test right around the time it came out, I wound up liking it so much I purchased a 1200 yard spool in lo vis green. I’m pretty content with it and Big Game monofilament for both casting and 1 spinning reel and I’m planning on picking up a few 1200 yard spools this winter in various pound tests. Let us know what you think of it after using it.

There are many good mono and co-polymer lines.  Too many to list.  Pick a few and enjoy your time experimenting with them.  There aren't many you would be disappointed with.

Some are more abrasion resistant than others.  Choose one like CXX, Platinum, Yo-Zuri, etc. if looking for a good one.  However, how often do you need abrasion resistance ocean fishing?  I ask because I never have fished in an ocean.

I did too and I continue to use it for certain applications. Primarily, jerkbaits.

Big Game is good line

Not sure what application and reel type you’re using it on so grain of salt time.  I found advance to be stiff and wiry for mono.  For me, in fresh water, where I’m using mono I like supple and low memory.  Suffix Elite is better in that regard.  Sunline supernatural is even better yet.

I’m going to guess you’re bottom bouncing with a round reel so elite might be a good shout.  It has a pretty decent coating that is slick and has good abrasion resistance.  Big game would be a good choice for that application also.

I like mono for bass fishing. I've never done any salt fishing. I have used Suffix mono and I liked it a lot. I don't remember if it was Advance or something else.

A very popular mono here in the Atlantic and Gulf  is Momoi Diamond Hi Catch. Very abrasion resistant yet supple. It's made in Japan. We use a 20 yard leader(25 lb) with braid mainline bottom fishing or jigging.

75 yard top shop (40lb) with braid mainline for trolling for pelagics.

It's not very expensive.

perfect info!!  thanks.

I was looking for stiff.  just a material for my leaders.   Alberto knot, to swivel.  then I tie my dropper rigs with it.   10lb loop to the sinker.

there is nothing more prone to twisting than a rig dropped 90 feet deep into a washing machine effect.

When I was saltwater fishing in CA I used Maxima green on my saltwater conventional reels.  The diameter is a little larger for the lb test but it never failed.

Yeah, in that case you should be okay.  I think big game would be the better mono for that (and there are probably better options as well).  But since you have the advance now, go for it.  I've fished a little saltwater like you are when I was in the UK.  We were dropping 120-180' into the wrecks with 8-16 oz metal with a meat strip on the back looking for cod and lingcod primarily.  Sometimes we were using double hook dropper rigs like you're using.  We were using heavy mono though, 50-80# for abrasion resistance on the metal wrecks.

This is an internet pic, not mine, but we were looking for cod, pollock, and these guys (ling)

A lot of people here have liked Sufix Advance, but I have had multiple line breakages when casting, using different spools on fresh line that I gave up with it.

Probably Siege or Elite. Both are decent lines. Siege is my mono of choice. It's not overly stretchy (it's mono, still has plenty), good abrasion resistance and I never have any problems with break offs or anything with it and it handles well even at the end of the season. It's straight up worth the extra cost over Big Game imo.

I have targeted my new “white whale”.  I’ll try lines that help me get it to the kayak.

I ordered 25lb and people think I should go 30.   But on a kayak, snags are a real danger.   I need to be able to break off.   Looking for my Goldilocks line is gonna be a process. :)

After looking through their offerings, it was Suffix Promix. I didn't use it extensively, just a spool on my casting reel until it got replaced, but I liked it.

If you're looking for stiff leaders, Rio and Mason make some fine hard mono leader material.  Look for "hard mono".
