Painting jigging spoons

Featured Replies

My babbitt spoon box is starting to run low and I don’t have any more. It is just about spooning time so I poured up 30 hard lead blanks this morning. I want to keep 20 of them from tarnishing so I sprayed one with clear and one with chrome (rattle can). The chrome looked better. I know the paint won’t stay on long but the spoons have a short lifespan anyway. Will it be any benefit for me to do a clear coat over the chrome?

I doubt that the chrome spray could stand the heat and I don’t have any clear powder to try your idea.

I tested rattle can and airbrush chrome with rattle can clear and epoxy i. In both cases, the chrome ran. I’d just fish them and touch them up as necessary. YMMV

Jigman, if you have any Devcon 2 Ton epoxy, use that. Not the 5 minute but the 30 minute stuff. Once you put it on it will harden and will give you that much more chrome flash. Once the epoxy is compromised from dragging on the bottom, then the paint will peel off. But I use this on my powder painted spinnerbaits and it makes the paint last longer. Let us know how you do.

Thanks. I don’t have any on hand but can pick some up. These spoons are not going to be used soon. They are replacements for when I need them and we are in the midst of a cold snap.

Everytime I have tried to clear over chrome paint it dulls. For that spoon I would use chrome powder paint if you want it shiny. Otherwise just clear over it right after you pour before it gets dull.
