BC Reel Making Noise

Featured Replies

I have a Quantum "IRON" BC reel that has started to make a noise when casting.  It only does it when the spool is spinning fast as the lure goes out.  I opened the side plate and lubricated all the spots I could find.  I'm not even sure it is coming from the spool itself.  Could it be from the magnets engaging when I cast?  I really like this reel a lot but I only paid $30 for it in a pawn shop.  I'm hoping that some of you reel mechanics can help me.

Thanks

To my knowledge, The "Iron" doesn't use magnets.  I stripped mine all the way down this year and oiled the bearings, greased gears, and it's better than ever.  You might want to contact ReelMech here on the board and see what he's got to add.

First off what kind of noise is it making, can you describe it some?

Is it one of the newer models IR410CX

I will check the model number when I get home.  I believe it is a newer one.  It does have magntic settings.  The noise is a "screech" for lack of a better word that only occurs while the spool is revolving when the line is going out.  HTH.

Really would like to know the model number of the reel.

Sounds like the spool support bearings are dry. Locate and add one drop of oil to each bearing and the metal or fiber shims underneath them. This should get rid of the free spool screeching you hear.

I will try to remember to post the model number in an hour or so when I get home.  Is there more disassembly required required to locate the bearings than just taking the side cover off?  I have never taken a bait caster apart before so, please, bear with me.

SteveFinMD,

Here is a screen cap of your reels schematic, the red circles are the bearings that support the spool. These are the bearings that need to be re-lubed, also the shims behind them. You don't need to disassemble the reel to get to them.

All you need is to remove the palming plate (#1) there is one in that plate, next remove the spool, look through the reel frame at the pinion gear hole, there is a bearing there (#17), next and final remove the cast control cap and there is a bearing (#59) there.

After viewing this if you feel you don't want to hassle with it, then I would seek a service center in your area, or send it to me.

Good Luck & Tight Lines All!!

Wow, thanks for the info.  I will take a look and if I'm still uncertain I will send it your way.  There are no screws on the palming cover.  There is one indent button on the bottom.  When I press that in, the cover does not come off.  Do I need a thin blade to get in there and pry it off?  You can tell I'm a little timid here because I don't want to mess the reel up by trying to force it off.

Thanks,

Steve

Press the button and twist the cover.

I forget which direction (old brain)..  :-?

Never pry..

I took it apart and put a drop of oil on the spots indicated.  As soon as it cools down some I will take it out for some trial casts.  I really can't thank you enough for your help.  Whenever I need reel service you can be sure you will get the business.

Thanks,

Steve
