Another Pawn Shop Bargain

Friday am, walked into a pawn shop on South Main here in Houston. Purchased the following:

Shimano Citica 200d  on an Allstar AGL PRM 7'0" rod    Priced 69.95       Paid 45.00

Shimano  Core100mg                                                Priced 99.95       Paid 70.00

Check your pawn shops if you want a deal. Some of the owners have no idea what a lot of the rods and reels are worth. I may go in 5-6 that have good stuff and the owner knows what their items are worth, but you will run across some that have no idea. This time of year many people are hocking their tackle.

The 70.00 is by far the most I have ever paid for a rod or reel in a pawn shop or garage sale. The deals are out there if you will spend the time to find them. Good hunting!

shimano core100mg for 70????? you have got to be kidding me. congrats on the pickup. If you paid 70 for it I wonder how much the owner sold it for.

Nope, the Core hasn't been out long enough to trade for $70...I think stolen.

I think most of the stuff in a pawn shop is stolen. It sucks, but I have actually found several of my items that had been stolen through the years, called the police, proved it with my id markings and walked out of the pawn shop no charge. If you have marked your stuff and can prove it the shop has to let you have it. Have done it twice and the shops gave me no problem. Naturally the officer was there and explained it to the shops owner. Keep records and how they are marked it is no problem. I mark my reels on the inside of a side plate with my initials and the last 4 digits of my SS#. It works

P.S.: I find very few deals in the national chains like Cash America or Easy Pawn. They must have some kind of pricing structure where they can research an item and pretty much know how to price it. It is the smaller mom and pop stores that you will find the better deals. Do not be afraid to dicker with them on the price, they always come off, some more than others. Make friends with an owner. It is amaising what really goes through those stores. I buy some items that never hit the shelves. If it is a fishing item he will call me when an item is about to go out front. Another thing; if you are looking to pawn or purchase a gun in one of these stores. If you pawn a gun you have to got back through the background check when you pick it up just like you go through when you originally purchase one new. A lot of people will pawn one, get into trouble, and not be able to pass the additional background check when they go to get it out. Watch for these deals. The gun has allready been through the waiting period and can be sold immediatly.

There's only one pawn shop near me that will even pawn rods and reels. To compound the problem, the owner is a former BASS Region champion.....we rarely see anything worth a hoot hit the shelves.

the pawn shops around here only carry the finest junk  ;)

Interesting.

I never thought of going to pawn shops to look for tackle.  Here on the Treasure Coast is mostly salt water fishing, but a little ride away from the coast is bass country.

It is never legal to buy stolen merchandise but my understanding is that in pawn shops the dealer is responsible for checking that out.

If you buy something I BELIEVE it is legally a good faith purchase.  If the item should prove to be stolen the pawn shop bears the burden of responsiblity.

I may check out a few

an Avid   to you Mr. Fishfordollars.

I learned long time ago this is how drug addicts and thieves make money.I don't shop pawn shops anymore.More than likely people are supporting thieves by buying this stuff.  :-/
