Flourocarbon vs. Mono

Featured Replies

I've always been a huge mono fan, but have tried braid and just don't like most of the disadvantages to make me use it.  I've only used Berkley Vanish and Transition as far as flourocarbon without much luck as well.

I'm really looking for opinions on a flourocarbon line that has great knot strength and abrasion resistance.  I would also like to hear from some of the guys that use all flourocarbon.

Pitching: flouro or mono

Senko: flouro or mono

Tex Rig Plastics: flouro or mono

Frog: flouro or mono (no braid)

Thanks again all,

Steve

You haven 't seen the adavantages of mono vs fluoro cuz you 've been comparing to "El Cheapo", try comparing to some true real good quality fluoro.

I 'm not a big fan of fluoro, in the tests I use the most it 's really wiry and doesn 't behave well, coils a lot once out of the spool and to my dismay, I can 't see the line against the background  :). But sensitive and abrassion resistance wise is superior compared to abrassion resistant lines like XT or Big Game. Not that I use it a lot but I do have a couple of reels spooled with fluoro just the way I have a couple of reels spooled with braided however neither of both lines are my everyday line, I still prefer nylon.

I went down the floro road this past year. I experimented with just about every brand. For me I like an easy casting line so I really liked Seagur invix. Suprisingly it was very abrasion resistant. If I were rich that is the line that I would buy. Floro is sooooo sensitive, but I really didn't catch any more fish on it than mono. So I tried some copolymers, specifically Yo-Zuri Hybrid ultra soft and P-line Cx premium. I really liked the Yo-Zuri, but I could only order it from Cabelas. My boss (wife) gets tired of me oredering off of the internet so I needed a fishing line source that I could just go to the store and buy. I went back to Cajun Red Cast mono that I had used the previous year and plan on using it this year. Out Wal-mart carries Cajun Red cast so it is very easy for me to "go buy grocieries" and end up with a 10years supply of fishing line and the boss never knows about it. :) I will use a little Power Pro Braid for swimming jigs, flipping vegetation, and frogs. I think all lines have their pro's and cons but mono is less expensive and does just as good a job as floro in my opinion. I not a chepo by any means (all my rods are G-loomis and reels Shimano) but I want my monies worth. That extra money for floro just doesn't pan out in my opinion. Cajun Red Cast is very abrasion resistant, very castable, and has enough sensitivity for me. Be warned when you start experimening with line you won't be able to stop.

You can try BPS XPS fluorocarbon, it 's made by Toray and doesn 't cost as much as Toray Super Hard Strong.

I really like Seaguar InvizX. It casts great for a flourocarbon, is very abrasion resistant, and holds a good knot.

X2

You can't go wrong with BPS XPS Fluorocarbon.

One trick I have learned, in case you are interested, is to spool up with about 50 yds. of mono before adding the fluorocarbon line.

This will save you at least $20 a month if you go through line as fast as I do.  Instead of stripping off a whole spool of mono .... you have 50 yds. of fluoro tied to another 50 yds. of mono.   :)

I used to fish pretty much nothing but mono, but I used fluoro a lot this year, and there ar some little things you can do that will make all the difference in the world. If you put it on the reel right and get all the memory out, get a good brand (BPS, Yozuri. Triple Fish, or even Berkley), use a reel magic type product, and tie really lubricate all your knots, it will blow mono out of the water.

I had used BPS XPS Fuoro for about a year with no problems.  Recently I got the Vicious Fluoro and like it as well or better than the XPS, PLUS it is cheaper.

I also really like the KVD Line & Lure on mono and fluoro lines.  Really takes out the memory much better than Reel Magic.  Found that if I order 4 bottles direct from RMR Industries I can get it cheaper than Bass Pro and as cheap as Reel Magic.  Here is the RMR website:

Another vote for Invizx. This is the first FC line I tried and I have never looked back. Stay away from transition. I carefully tied an improve clinch knot the first time I used it (my newbie bro bought it without my counsel ::)) and the thoughts of previous experiences of folks in these posts immediately came to mind about this line breaking.

Back to the knot. As I mentioned, it was carefully tied. I gave the line a gentle but firm tug and the line snapped.  I tried the palomar and the same frickin' result. I guess the rumors are true. I think they should change the name from Vanish to Poof.  Because if you have a fish on, Poof! The fish will perform a disappearing act. How fitting that this lie is call Vanish, because that is what the fish will do.  Maybe it was a bad batch, but I am not willing to take any more chances.  SeaGuar Invizx You arren't going to see a need to look anywhere else for a fluorocarbon lline.  :)

I agree with most here, I think the old monage, If it ain;t broke, don;t fix it applies well here. Mono has been around forever, and will probably always be, until some new space age line comes out. I have heard that Seagar is a GREAT fluro line, but this was in regards to using it as a leader while bait fishing for stripers. This is the only time I plan on using fluoro. As far as freshwater fishing goes, I never though there was "really" a "need" for superlines, but after seeing some pics for last years Guntersville trip, and several other timber fields and lily fields that are the area of a baseball field of nothing but old broken tree stumps sticking out of the water everywhere, or areas that are just covered in lily pads or grass where you can hardly see the surface of the water. Now I know why they invested braided lines. I have yet to use them, since I have yet to need them, the onyl freshwater fishing I do is in local ponds where the elements aren;t that bad.
