Grandpa's Baitcaster

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I just found this in my garage and dad told me it was my great grandpa's baitcaster. Any ideas of how old this sucker might be?!

Bassboy 15, I cannot read the sideplate information in the pic. It looks like it says POLARIS. I can find no reference to Polaris in my books that looks like this reel. It looks like a Bronson/J.A.Coxe design, by the steel piece fitted on the non-crank side and the reel foot. Shakespeare and Pflueger had some designs that looked very similar. Is this a left hand crank reel? I estimate this reel is from the late 1950's to early 1960's, but cannot be sure. Like the Abu Ambassadeur, these old designs didn't change much over the years. If you have any other information(wording on sideplates, stamped company ID), I could try a little more.

hey, i looked carefully and it says, miltex polaris, no. 99

thanks for doing this for me

No problem, old reels are becoming a hobby of mine. I have a couple of other guys working on this, they are "reel" nuts. So far my date estimate seems to be correct. They think that this is probably a reel made by Bronson for Canadian/European markets. The design is very similiar to a few Bronson/J.A.Coxe reels, this is by the rivets and screws on the sideplates. Hopefully they can come up with some better information in the next couple of days.

Cool, just kind of cool to see what my gpa was using 50 some years ago!
