Keep bait casting reel horizontal or vertical ?

Featured Replies

When casting with your bait caster how do you like to hold your reel? I have always held mine so that the reels handles are in the air. That's for a right handed reel. It just feels better to me and I seem to have better control. I'm also a one handed caster and never seen much use for two handed casting except for surf fishing.  ;) Mike

That's a trick that helps a lot when people are learning to use a baitcaster, but after you become more proficient, I don't think it is as important.

I hope Reelmechanic sees this, I think he stated that keeping the handels up, helps the centrifugal brakes work.

Muddy, That has always been my understanding too. I just got so comfortable with it that it has become my way to cast. Never found any difference by holding it one way or the other but some say that it makes a big difference to them. Mike

I'm sure you know a whole lot more about this stuff then I ever will but I still see alot of pros cast that way today. The thing I like about it is the way my thumb seems to automatically feather itself on the side of the spool. Mike

I am not disagreeing with you, that's how I usually cast. However, I notice a lot of guys that are pretty darn good don't seem to make the adjustment.

Yep, I agree and maybe I should give it a little more time as well as two handed casting. Some of those guys make it look so easy it's unreal!  ;) Maybe If I did it for a living I could do that too. ;D
