I read somewhere once that spinnerbaits are best just under the surface, up to a foot under. The article read that outside of this zone, there ar elures that are better choices because they are more productive. Has anyone else heard this, or feel this way?

I was watching a show with Shaw Grigsby fishing down in Mexico and they were putting 1 oz. weights on their spinner baits to get them down to 10-15 feet. So I'm guessing this article was a crock of you knwo what. But, I just thought I'd ask.

You are severly limiting yourself by fishing the bait only one way. Most of my better spinnerbait fish have been caught slowrolling a larger blade in deeper water. Run it into anything you can during the retrieve and drop it like a rock around cover. I catch many more on the blade this way. Seldom do I fish it as you are describing except spring and low light conditions.

I like to let them sink all the way to the bottom then slow roll them back with a nice steady retrieve.

Just under the surface is definately the way to go in very shallow water 3 ft or less especially around very active fish,over weed beds,and anytime you see the bass pushing bait towards the surface.(ie:FALL)

But ya,dont know about that article because they make 3/4oz + baits for a reason.Creek channels,deep offshore humps or structure are just some of the examples of when you can use it below the surface.

The size of the blade(s) determines what speed and fall rate can be achieved.Sometimes faster is better.
