I just strip it off by hand, I've seen tackle shops use a razor blade

I just strip all the line off by hand. Tie an Arbor knot to the spool and reel the line onto the spool, while keeping alot of tension on the line.

But hey Harpoon, and all, PLEASE after you remove the old line from your reels, cut it into as many short pieces as you can, before disposing it. This will prevent animals from becoming entangled, choked, maimed, etc.

The way I feel about it, even if its 'just' a Seagull at the landfill, it's still a living creature, which I wouldn't want to kill, unless I were going to eat it.

And besides, looking out for nature brings good fishing karma ;-)

Good advise Chris, and thanks everyone.  What I was more looking for was for putting the new line on.  Can't see how I can do this by myself.  do you just have someone hold the spool of line as you reel the reel?

I recently picked up one of those Plano Line Spooling boxes from BPS.  

It definitely is easier than having my wife hold the spool with a pencil.  Haha.  

I put a pencil through the spool.  Then I put two 2x4's on either side of the spool with the pencil at the back end of the 2x4's.  This keeps the spool upright and stops if from rolling across the floor to me.  Works pretty well, but I do like the thought of those spooling boxes.  Seems those would work nicely for storage and for spooling reels.

Good comment Chris..I stuff my old line in a milk bottle, or anything that's recycleable..As for spooling line, I have a 1' long pice of 4X4 wood, can be any type of wood, drill a hole the size of whatever you want use for slipping the new spool over i.e. a phillips screwdriver, or whatevere...the bigger the 4X4 is, the more tension you can put on it, or you can clamp it down to keep it from moving.

On the rarest of moments when I use mono I soak the filler spool in hot water for 5-6 minutes. Put in back in the box and tape the end to the spool and just crank it in.  Works perfect every time, I love seeing that box flop around.  I've got some 4# mono on an ul for 2 years, still no line twist.

I backlash the snot out of it and then cut it out.  Very convenient, I didn't even know the line needed replacing!

Works great and I can do it all by myslef.  

I use a cordless  drill with a long driver bit in it to unwind my old line. The line just pulls off of the bit when done. I then put the old line into a container that will not let anything get into it.
