I had my 25 year old Shimano reel upgraded and cleaned by the Reel mechanic. It arrived in the mail today, and so did 4" of snow, so I haven't tried it out as yet.

I do want to point out that he communicates with the customer at every step. Such as; received reel, checked reel out and here is what's needed, work done and the cost is, received your check & reel is shipping, reel shipped.

I hate when something is sent out to what seems like a dark hole and you wait hopefully for it to show up again.

The reel looks good. Seems very free and has a machine oil scent. I see a big fish in it's future.

It had to be in the mail;..... God would not do that to a man just getting a reel back that needs trying out. ;D

he cleaned 4 shimanos for me about 2 months ago.  He was awesome to do business with.  Constant communication and the reels have never been smoother.  He has yet another satisfied customer.

Yep, Reel Mech is good to go. And this post reminds me I need to get a box of reels in the mail to him.

To be any better, he would have to pick up the reel and pay you to service it.

Honestly, I can't wait until I have to have mine done by him. Only problem is, that all 3 of my Shimano reels, and both my Abus are new, so at the end of this coming season, he's getting them all!

over greased. I have my new reels serviced when

they are brand new. For some, the improved performance

is remarkable.

There used to be a 10% discount for Reel Mechanic's service but I can't find it on the site anymore. :-/

I have sent and will be sending my reels to him again (hopefully this weekend). They come back better than when they were new.  I second sending the reels NIB to him, the difference is unbelievable.  And because of that, I don't care if I get a 10% discount or not!

Hmm...

Reel Mechanic is factory trained and has been

in the business for thirty years or more. His

"helpful" suggestions are for cleaning and oiling

easily accessible parts. Opening the reel case is

another ballgame. If you have mechanical skills

and have disassembled/ reassembled numerous

reels over the years, you can probably clean

your Calais. However, I would send mine to a

professional.

Just don't think about how much it will cost you to replace it when you screw it up.....

I wouldn't recommend someone start learning how to service a reel with a Calais.  There are some tricky details just to get the body off the frame.

Oh well, like I said, I'll gladly pay a little more for his expertise.

If only all reels were as simply designed as Abu's C series.
