The old...what would you buy thread.

Featured Replies

Ok, you open up Tackle Warehouse knowing you need 2 new poles, 1 casting, 1 spinning.

The spinning rod will be used for tubes, worms, occasional small crank.

The casting rod will be used for spinnerbaits, cranks.

Now you are wanting to spend somewhere around 80-120 on the rods (a piece).

What would you do?  What would you do?

Spinning: St Croix Mojo 6'8" M/XF

Casting: Abu Vendetta 7' M/Mod fast

Start collecting stamps as a hobby.  :)

A couple of 7' medium/fast rods would do me.

LOL, nice, stamps.

Any particular brands or rods stick out in your mind from your own use?

Lamiglas Excel (Casting 734 or 735) (Spinning 704).

Wait for their spring sale (February?) and get them for ~$96 each.  I love both of mine and am really tempted to get one of the monster 7'11" flippin' sticks.

That being said, I think you're going to get a chorus of:

Falcon Bucoo

St. Croix Mojo

Shimano Compre

Abu Veritas/Vendetta

All Star ASR

Denali Jadewood

All well respected and strong options.

That is kinda what I was looking for.  I get off track and overwhelmed looking at all the options.  I figure if I get a few quality suggestions from the brain trust around here I would have a direction and comparison base.

check out denali jadewood series you cant beat them ffor around a 100.00 check em out you wont be sorry.

Do I have the wrong thought process that I can throw cranks and spinnerbaits on the same rod?

Id go with a Powell 703 glass CB rod and a 6'9ML Veritas spinning. Thats a $120 each avg. :)

I would prefer a moderate action for diving cranks, and an extra fast action for spinnerbaits, but a fast action will work fine for both.

OK, I have MH with a fast tip that I use for pitching/flipping.  Doubling that up and throwing spinnerbaits on that makes sense.  Will a Medium with moderate action work for cranks and topwaters maybe?

  • Super User

A medium or MH with moderate action will work great for cranks & topwaters. Just remember you need a little give in the equation for treble hook baits. If your using braid definitely go with moderate action. If your using mono or floro with stretch built in then you can consider using moderate fast or fast action.

Yup, you surely can.  While many on this board dislike them, I have a Skeet Reese Tessara spinnerbait/worm rod that does both rather nicely.  Of course, I also have two Lamiglas Excel 705C's that can do the same thing, although I suspect that the 704 would be a bit better for cranks/SB's.

Probably going to go with a copoly like yozuri in 12 or 15 lbs.  I don't care for braid on topwaters, I always seem to tangle the hooks in the braid.

Ok, with all that said, I guess I am looking for a medium to medium heavy, 7', moderate action pole for crankbaits and topwaters....running copoly

ok, I think I might have it figured out.  I am leaning towards the:

Falcon Bucoo Spinning rod - 7' Medium

Medium/fast Taper

Denali Jadewood casting rod - 7' Medium - Cranking Moderate Taper

Does anyone have any experience with them?

That Powell does a great job at cranks and spinnerbaits  Don't know about the Veritas, but I am more and more intrigued the more I hear about them.

Ive been very impressed with them. The one I recommended Ive been flippin 3lb fish into the boat with it. Maybe not a good idea, but it has not been an issue. In a tournament those fish will be netted.
