Lake Chesdin?

Featured Replies

Anyone ever fish there?  Any suggestions?

I always forget about this place and I'm hoping pleasure boaters do as well.

Fishing has been tuff.  The lake was very low 2 weeks ago but has come back up in the last week.  We had some luck on points and on hot days skipping under docks.  From friday evening thru sunday are a mess on the lake due to tubing, skiing, and jet skis.....Lake can produce big fish if they can be located.

Thanks for the info.  Was trying to figure out a place to go this weekend, but I've given up on taking the boat out.  Don't want to deal with all the people.  Luckily their time is up as the temperature starts to drop.

Kirby, what about bank fishing at the Powhatan Lakes?  :)

Sam - I actually did that on Labor Day, but didn't go out until mid afternoon.  I had a fish on a texas rigged lizard, but I'm still figuring the hookset with texas rigging...either that or I'm doing it wrong.  Still learning that one.  The wife caught a sunfish on a nightcrawler.  And then it started pouring down rain.

Definitely interested in figuring it out more since its close to the house.  There any decent sized fish in there?  I know its only recently been reopened.  Wish I had a smaller boat so I could putt around there, great cover everywhere, and the kind I know how to get into.

How is fishing Powhatan Ponds?  Only ever went hiking there(we just moved here at the beginning of summer) and ended up with ticks crawling all over us.

And another boating question...when do the jet skiers and water skiers disappear from the Watkins Landing area?

Kirby, three friends tell me that Lake Chesdin is very low.

Even launching your boat at Seven Springs can be a problem with the low water. You don't want your trailer to run off the concrete pads.

Seven Springs will close their ramps if the water gets too low.

You may have to launch from the free Dinwiddie VGIF ramp.

Friend said he saw tree stumps he never knew where there so this is a good time to recon the lake, but be careful due to the low water.

An third guy said that he and his dad had to push their lightweight jon boat across the narrow passage to get back into the swamp area due to the low water but the water in the Appomattox was OK.

Have fun and let us know what you catch, if anything, and what is your take on the water level.

And regarding catching bass, they have seemed to have shut down with all this rain and cold nights.  Water temp is in the 70s and the bass are seeking deeper water in the main channel/river. Water is still in some of the grass along the shoreline which is a good place to try your luck.

Water clarity is stained.  :)

Regarding Watkins Landing, the water skiers and jet boats disappear when the dentists show up to check the people's teeth.  ;D   ;D   ;D

Actually, now that school has started, they will float away.

But the landing is still gong to be a pain to launch unless you put in at dawn and a larger headache when you want to trailer due to the fools who have no idea what they are doing at the ramp.

Be patient and don't get into any arguments. The people are very nice, even the ones without any teeth, and will work with you at the ramp.  :)

At nigth The pier near the dam is good for Cat fishing, usually no one stays around after dark at least in the late summer/fall, the station across the lake is noisy as hell though. I've heard the back side of the dam has some huge cats as well but I have no clue how you get to it.

If you never been to the nottoway river you should try it, the river is a lot of fun with the exception of it either being to high or to low. It has a bunch of different types of fish, all of the sunfish redears, pumpkin seed, warmouth, etc crappie, largemouth, smallmouth, Rockbass, Roanokebass, walleye, Gar, perch, pickerel, all cats, carp, bowfin, shad, the list goes on you never know what your going to pull out.
