Fishing Runouts??????

Featured Replies

What do yall recommend to throw in runouts? Where I will be fishing this weekend there is alot of runouts that go into the woods. The water has been really high here in LA and now it is falling so the water will be moving out of the woods through the runouts. Also, what color would yall reccomend. The water will be stained/clear due to the fresh water that we have had latley..........THANKS!!! Our predominate food down here for bass are crawfish, shad, and frogs.

First, Welcome to the forum

Small crankbaits in Shad and crawfish colors

Plastics in Camo, watermellon/red, plum, black/blue, cinnamon, for starters

1/4 and/or 3/8 spinnerbaits with a natural colored skirt. I thin out my skirts this time of year down from 40 strands to about twenty to downsize the profile of the bait. Something white with silver or blue sparkle on the skirt should work. If the drain is deeper you will need to adjust the size of all weights and SB heads to allow the lures to go deeper.

The larger fish may very well be staged out deeper, so do not just go in and fish the area that is up close. Back out looking for stumps, brush, and grass in the outlying deeper areas.

Good luck

Would chartruse and white be a natural color to use? Also would an indiana blade be ok in the gold color??

Yes, as the Chartruse color looks grey  as it goes deeper. Indiana blade is fine depending on the visibility. You need a blade to push more water the less visibility you have. Be sure that the color is uniform. Many times you will have a tinge to the water that is only on the surface, but from the conditions you have stated the water probably is uniform through out. You can change the amount of water a blade will move by changing the cup of the blade. This will also help  control the speed of the bait. If the water is stained and you want to control the speed you can acomplish this by flattening the blade or changing to a larger blade. Be careful though, by changing to a larger blade you will increase the overall profile of the lure and there are times you do not want to do that. Flattening the blade will increase the arc of its swing and the amnount of pull it will have when you retrieve it. You can change a blade by using pliers to crimp the edge or if you are off the water you can use a trailer hitch ball to hammer the desired cup you want.

If you are fishing a 40 strand skirt entertain the thought of removing a few of the Chartrues strands. This will lower the overall profile of the skirt as well as tone down the color somewhat. I like to reduce the strands to around twenty. I've seen it make a huge difference. You want the fish to be able to see it, but not get a good enough look at it to decide that it is a fake. I tend to fish most of my blades in the upper water column as this allows the fish to see the comotion but not see it for what it really is. Seems to make a lot of fish go ahead and commit to the strike instead of turning away. Try it sometime when you have fish swirling at at  it . This usually confirms that either the color is off or the lure profile is either too large or bulky. JMO.
