your swimbait gear

Featured Replies

What's your set-up? What lures are you throwing and what are you throwing them on. Line, reel, rod, softsided, hard-baits, and how you rig em'..........

The only 'swimbaits' that I use right now are the Strike King Shadalicious, GYCB Swimbait, and the GYCB Swimming Senko.  I cast all three on a 7ft MH rod with 7:1 High Speed Daiwa baitcasting reel.  I use braided line on all of the lures, unless the water is gin-clear.  Then I use a flouro leader that is about 6ft long.

Okuma XH 7' 11" rod, Shimano Cardiff 400 reel, and P-Line CXX 25lb line. I throw all my swimbaits on it. See them in my signature.

I also use a Dobyns 806 but I use a Revo SX with 25lb Trilene 100% fluorocarbon. This is what I throw all of the big ones on.

I don't have a list of the swimbaits I use but most of them are hard sided.

I won't be of much help since the 3 I use are customs but they are built on the following blanks

Batson IMU 786

AllStar IGMB 968

AllStar BAT 828

I was using Revos but sold them...  temporarily using Abu 4600/5500's.

Here on Lake St. Clair, we've been using "swim bait" gear for many years before the Left Coast guys started the craze. We just call them something different................Muskie Tackle.

Abu Garcia C4-6500 on old custom made rods.

#1 - 7'-6"

#2 - 8'-3"

I haven't found any new rods that I like as much as these old rods.

geez fourbizz, do you throw swimbaits much? How do you like the 300 size reel? I read that they have a recessed foot so that they are easier to palm.

If you're working on some new baits can I float you some cash for a prop bait?

For the guys who've been using low profile reels, is this in place of a not-purchased round?  Or do you feel like the smaller reels are good enough?

yeah WII, a bit ;)

I like the shimano 300 rounds for 20lb. definitely not for 25lb+ and bigger baits. The Luna 300 is similar in size to a shimano 400.

Generally speaking, I just feel more comfortable with the 400's. THe 400 TE is really tall, the Cardiff 400 is REALLY wide, and the Calcutta 400B is THE perfect swimbait reel.

There are plenty of guys out there using low profile reels and with 2 or 3 exceptions (curado 300, quantum cabo, Daiwa BBS) i think it is just a countdown till they blow up, at least with big baits, not foofy little paddle tail tubes :). I have fragged a couple low pro shimano's. I just like knowing that I have plenty of line and plenty of reel. With a 15+ bulldogging around, I don't want to be stuck with my johnson in my hand because i was trying to make a little reel "work". With these big baits and big fish there are just too many little nuances that can ruin the whole thing. I lost a 10+ at the boat a month ago, because my net was 6" out of place and got hung up when i reached for it. That won't happen again, and neither will a sissy reel!

btw, check your pms
