walleye/Sauger/Saugeye

Featured Replies

Stopped by a local retention pond aiming for some LMB after work today.  LMBs were nowhere to be found, so I decided to throw my baitcaster in the car and pulled out my ML spin rod loaded with 6lb mono to play with some bluegills for a few minutes.  Tied on a 3/16 blakemore roadrunner and on my third cast I hooked a 22" Walleye/Sauger/Saugeye (not exactly sure which).  I have fished that pond since I was about 10 and never caught anything other than bluegill, largemouth, and crappie.  How/why would a walleye be in a 5 to 6 acre retention pond that at most is 15 feet deep in ONE spot, the rest is all vegetation that reaches from the bottom to about 8 inches below the surface!?  I can't believe I actually landed that fish on 6lb mono!

I used to spend a few weekends each summer on Erie with my grandpa hooking Walleye, but its been at least 10 years since I've hooked one.  I'm still not 100% sure it was a walleye, could have been a saugeye or sauger, but at 22" I'm happy regardless.  It certainly beat catching a bluegill!

My best guess would be some "midnight stocking."
