Favorite catfish gear!

Featured Replies

I found a good place to catfish and I think I'm going to do that until it gets a little warmer so what is every ones favorite lures/gear to use to catch catfish?

Rod: Just about any stout medium-heavy or heavy rod will do the job. I use Lightning Rods, my buddy prefers Ugly Sticks. Sensitivity and light weight are not big concerns as you're not constantly casting and the bites are not subtle. No need to blow a lot of money on a rod, just use something solid.

Reel: I like an Abu 6000 with the bait clicker. Usually I fish with several rods, and I rely on the clicker to let me know when a fish is running.

Line: 65# Power Pro braid with a 20lb mono leader. The leader is important as it's easier to break off when necessary. If you're fishing around rocks, just stick to mono.

Hooks: Most will suggest circle hooks. I switched to circle hooks this year, but I struggled to overcome my instinct to set the hook. Next year I'm going back to the Mustad wide gap catfish hooks.

Bait:

If you want those delicious 2 pound channel cats, it's tough to beat chicken livers and nightcrawlers.

If you target big flatheads, they prefer live bait. Live Bluegill and large shad will attract the monsters.

If you're going after big blue cats, or big channel cats, they prefer cut bait. Around here that means cut-shad and cut-asian carp. I'm guessing any soft-bodied baitfish would work.

Get a throw net and practice in the yard until you get it down. Catching live bait and fresh cut bait are key to consistently catching big cats.

Ugly Stik rod. Ugly Stiks are the best cat rods. G Loomis should make a catfish rod as good as an Ugly Stik.

I like to use my saltwater setup that I use for peir fishing. For bait I use hot dogs, shrimp, and nightcrawlers. I hear chicken livers are killer though.

Chicken liver catches more catfish for me than anything, but usually wants to fly off the hook (you can wrap a piece of cheesecloth or pantyhose around it and work that onto the hook to help it stay on). Beef liver and nightcrawlers also make good catfish bait.
