Saugeye??

Featured Replies

Anyone here do any fishin' for Saugeye?

A small local lake has been stocked with them for several years and among the folks that I've talked to, not many seem to be targeting these fish. Most don't know that they're in the lake at all.

What's the best way to catch Saugeye? Similar baits and tactics to Walleye?

Thanks in advance for your info!

I'll be away for a few days, but I'll catch up next week.

I have no experience catching saugeye, but can tell that they're a cross

between a female walleye and male sauger. The nice thing about saugeyes

is that they reproduce, unlike most hybrids which are sterile. In fact, they'll reproduce with either walleyes or sauger.

According to what I've read, they're more tolerant of discolored water that walleyes (a trait from saugers)

but may be taken with all the standard walleye techniques.

Thanks, Roger!

I think I'll try to put some of these in the freezer before winter sets in.

If they taste as good as walleye,

I'll be happy

I have a lake here that is stocked with them.  They can actually get pretty big.  Definately fish for them much like walleye, although I can say I am by no means an expert and find them to be "finicky", catch them by accident occaisionally bass fishing and crappie fishing.  Hard bottom areas are usualy best, especially near deep water.  Use jigs or rattle traps or if you get real serious start doing some of the crazy walleye stuff like Lindy rigs and live bait. Great eating too, just make sure they are of legal size... and watch their teeth!
