beach fishing

Featured Replies

Anyone fish from the beach in Destin,FL? Im going there the end of May on vacation with my family, and plan on doing some fishing. What kinds of fish do you normally catch from the beach? Is it common to catch snook from the beach? I will most likely be fishing at daybreak and just before dark.

I caught a bunch of ladyfish in the Destin surf last August on bubble straw rigs.  You can get them at BPS in Destin or any good tacle shop.  Fill the bubble half way with water, toss out, pop (causing nice chug) and the fish think there's a feeding frenzy they are missing out on and they go ape nuts.  It's insanely fun but the fish aren't good eaters.  24 to 36" and real fighters.  Caught some nice bluefish as well.

We chartered a boat for red snapper and that was a blast as well.  Very good eaters there...

Also - king mackerels from the pier but hard to say what's running in May.

Have fun!

I live a few minutes from Destin and after a few times saltwater fishing I refuse to do it again. I like to fish to relax and have fun. To me, Saltwater fishing is entirely too much work.. but there are a LOT of people here that love it so it should be easy to find some.

Have fun!! 8-)

Not familiar with Destin but I fish the beach just about everyday in the Delray area.  To fish the beach all you really need is a spoon ( piece of piano wire if fishing for mackerel), nothing else.  Jerkbaits soft and hard work fine as do top lures and feathers.  The only time I use something different than a spoon is for my own change of pace, most beach fisherman down here  walk with but 1 lure on their rod and maybe a backup in their pocket.

For saltwater ( inshore )it's all about tide, wind and the presence of bait, no bait no fish..........go bass fishing.

Even if it is from shore, don't forget your saltwater fishing license... previous years did not require a license fishing from shore but for 2010 it is now required. Locals need a $9 shore license or $17 on/offshore license.
