Another weekend at Gaston Jan 26-28

Featured Replies

Had a 3 day weekend so we decided to go on down to the lake. It was one COLD weekend. The lows were in the mid 20's with highs in the mid 40's, I think it hit 50 today though. The water was very cold, it ranged from 40-45 degrees.

Saturday we got out on the water around 10 and couldn't buy a bite. We fished points, steep bluffs, and deep docks with jigs, jerkbaits and crankbaits and couldn't get bit. We went in for a few hours and got back out for the last hour and a half of daylight. We went to a mainlake pocket with deep docks where we've been catchin a few and caught 3 off the docks. My brother caught 2 dinks and I caught a 3.68 lber.

Sunday was a very cold, and very windy day. We started fishing the mainlake and got nothing, not a single bite so then we went back into our creek and started fishing points and I only got 2 all day and my brother got skunked. I caught a 5.41 lber and a 3.4 lber. The 5.4 came on a jerkbait in about 9 feet of water off a stump. The 3.4 came off a point.

Today we only had two hours to fish and I caught a 3.5 and my brother blanked. I caught it on a jig. I had a few more bites but they were just not taking the bait into their mouths! No action on jerkbaits today.

Thanks,

Matt Strykul

Pictures are in order of catch ;D

Super.

Am going to Gaston on March 8 so I may impose on you for some suggestions.

Usually stay around Popular Creek but we have been known to venture out to other places on the lake.

Thanks for sharing.

Sam,

We haven't made it up to Poplar in our boat, haven't really tried to though! I'll be happy to answer any questions when the time comes.

yeah that kid just isnt an angler. i believe he is under the style that it is better to look good than fish good

Hahhaha, I guess so. I look so goofy in these pictures. It was freezing though.

Check your PM's Steve

Way to stick em Matt.  My luck in the cold water hasn't been nearly as good lately as yours has.  Keep on catchin them bro.

Thanks Ryan. My PB and the 5.4 lber and many of the 3 pounders (even from my last trips) have been off the same point. The funny thing is it's SO close to where we stay, it takes under a minute to motor over there.

Nice fish and pictures Matt. Keep outfishing your brother, and maybe he'll give up and you can have all his gear!  ;D

Hahahha we always joke around saying "Oh I'm gonna catch a 10 lber off this dock watch...." and then the other person says "oh ill give youall my tackle if you even catch a fish THIS cast."

It's been close a few times  ;D

He's my fishing partner though, he's a really really good fisherman too, he's just not getting bit!

Matt, when you taking me fishing? LOL, My luck so far this year has been terrible. I bought a couple of Kistlers and a Carrot Stix I need to break in.

  • Author

Hahah, if you don't mind fishin out of a small boat, anytime is good!

Kistlers and Carrot stix to break in!!!!! That'll be fun. Have you fished the Carrot stick yet? They're awesome

I tried the Carrot, It's a 6'9 med with a parabolic bend. I think I'm going to sell it. Don't get me wrong, it's a great rod but I wanted one that does not have a parabolic action.

That's too bad, you really shouldn't give up on the Carrot Sticks, I say you should try one that's not parabolic. If were ever fishin in the same area I'll let you try any of the ones I have, I'll have 2 more soon enough.  ;D

I love the Carrot, but it's just not the action I need. Would be willing to trade for the one I want. I got a great deal on it, @ $105.00 I could'nt pass it up.

:oThat is quite a price! Where did you get it from if you don't mind me asking?

I bought it from Daves Tournament @ the Richmond Bass-a-rama. They also had the Boyd Duckett's and Kistler on sale too.
