Ice Fishing

Featured Replies

I was just wondering what you guys thought about it. I'm considering going out with one of my friends this year. Still not sure if I really wanna go and just sit in the cold. I obviously know wait til safe ice but just wondering your thoughts about ice fishing.

Thanks,

If the fish are biting its fun, if the fish are not biting then it can't get boring and miserable.

Tried it twice all i caught was ice Standin out there feelin colder thaan a well diggers butt was not my idea of fun A lot of my friends do the whole 9 yards with shacks and all that me im home watchin bill dance and in fisherman reruns tryin to find the remote

I feel it's better than sitting in front of a TV all winter.

the best way not to sit in front of the tv all winter is to sit in different places in the room sometimes im in front sometimes to the left and sometimes to the right IT BREAKS UP THE MONOTONY ::) ;D

I would like to try it somtime, it couldnt be that bad because it is related to fishing. It would also allow me to not have to go 5 months without cathcing a fish.  8-)

Are you talking ice fishing for bass, or other species?

HH

i do it just to get out. dont catch much. have a good time with friends.

Low Budget I just mean in general. I'd really be happy with anything. The guys I would go with just wanna catch it if it swims, they really don't care what it is. Also I've never really heard of anyone ice fishing for bass, but that would be pretty cool if that would work.

Ice fishing is a great time. Gather up the family and friends, take a bunch of food to cook up and you have the making of a memorable outing. In Maine we primarily fish through the ice for salmon and trout but if a bunch of kids are going and we want some fast action we'll go chase the white perch and pickerel. Sometimes early in the season you get some unsnowed on ice and everyone takes their skates for a little hockey action. For me it's a different passion than my bass fishing. Ice fishing is more about the comraderie of getting together with the gang and finding ways to make the best of 3 or 4 months of winter. I'd get a bad case of cabin fever without it.

frankly if you live in central ny and don't ice fish you should have you're head examined

I love it i'm already looking at the bay's in anticipation

do's this mean I wouldnt' rather be in the boat? heck no! but since I live here and we've gotten 2 feet of snow in the last week i'll deal with it

I do a lot of ice fishing.  I like it.  I have to like it.....I live in Quebec.

First thing....dress warmly.  Warm boots are a must.  Most people I see do not dress enough for ice fishing.  Inner layers of clothing must be for insolation.  The outer layer of clothing must cut the wind because the wind is the most disagreable part of ice fishing.  A very good snowmobile suit is great but you will need something to cover your head and the back of your neck.  Buy clothes that are extra large.  If everything is right, you should be able to sit for hours without feeling the slightest bit cold.

The nice thing with ice fishing is that you can bring stuff to make the experience more comfortable (folding chair, small propane stove for heating up your lunch, bucket to put your fish, lots of hand cloths, extra mitts, gloves, scarves etc.)

Fish that spawn in the spring are active during the winter.  They have to feed as much as possible in order to sexually mature for the spawning season.  All the trout species are very active during the winter...no matter what time of the year they spawn.

I guess if you say "brrrrrrrrrr", that means you do not dress warm enough.  When well dressed for ice fishing, it's as cozy as fishing on a nice warm summer day.  Much more cozy than fishing when it's very hot.  There is no way to feel real comfortable when it's very hot.

since my last post we recieved another two feet of snow!!! aint' lake effect grand?

seriously oh I was serious

Oneida's bay's are icing and i think wel'll be fishing before christmas

The only Ice fishing I do, is fishing for Ice cubes for my tea!

Tea is not exactly what I had in mind.

When I lived in Colorado some friends of mine use to ice fish. Funny thing was, they never caught any fish. Come to think of it, they never took any rods or tackle with them.

Hmmm?

A few friends and I have a couple of pike spearing shacks.  We bring the propane heater and a ton of beer.  It sure isn't bass fishing, but it helps pass the winter.

yeah, we've all fished through that ice.   And, even tho there were no rods & reels, we caught some WHOPPERS! (told some too!)  LOL
