seasonal pond question

Featured Replies

I fish this one area of a pond in the summer where I catch lots of fish. In both the fall and spring when it's colder I don't even see any. Do the fish change locations during these times.

same here, I can't catch a d**n thing in ponds when the water gets cold, I have tried everything but it just is no where near as productive as during the spring and summer.

Bass will still be found in shallow water occasionally when they are feeding, but they tend to suspend in deeper water the majority of the time. Worse than that, however, when the water is cold their metabolism is much lower and they are often inactive. Fish don't actually hibernate, but they approach a state that is very similar. Generally, slow presedntations are more effective, but even that approach often requires hitting the fish in the face with your lure or bait. Absolute location can be crucial.

Focus on structure, it offers your best chance of catching a fish.

Locally, my most productive pond will produce two or three bass per hour fishing in the warmer months, sometimes it can be much better. November through early March this same pond produced about one bass for every four hours on the water. I had many days without a bite. Fortunately, things have picked up a bit recently.

Good luck!

I agree with road warrior. Winter months are hard to get out and land fish. Depending on the depth and temperature of the water all plays crucial parts in where the fish are. Suspending cranks, bouncin' a jig off the bottom, and carolina rigs with an Ika or tube are my best lures in the winter. You have to be very patient when you are fishing these types of conditions. The fish are out there but they aren't very aggresive.

Again in aggrement with raodwwarrior, your location is everything. Look for downed trees, rocks, shelf lines, rip-wrap, and anything the fish could be hiding. They don't move much unless they are eating and it's not at any fast pace.
