Deep Cut, Weeds and Dragonfly's

Featured Replies

No not some title to a 60's freelance video title........anyways....

The pond im fishing is strictly a shore fishing pond, it's just way too shallow in most places with one narrow deep cut in the middle.  I've been doing ok this season since spring gettin' em out of the cover along the shore and around structure about 20 feet out.  Well, it's hellacious hot now, lowest temp is 90.  Seeing that it's that hot, you figure they're out in that narrow stretch of deep water.  Well, I've tried carolina rigging all over that lake using craw trailers, power worms, and even senkos.  There's a not so high layer of thin milfoil on the bottom of the whole lake except up on the shallows.  What's the best way of keep baits off of a bottom like that even if there are bass on the bottom of that lake (whicn i doubt there is).  Becaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaause, leading to my other issue here.  The weeds......actually brush I should call it, is so thick you can't see even one little pindot of a glimmer of water.  Even going weedless you will get hung up and that extends all the way out from shore 3 feet.  Ever since these high temps ive been trying to get em out of that cover by somewhat paralell casting to the shore as much as i can without getting hung up but no sucess.  Should I slow down or what with this cover?  AND last but not least.........DRAGONFLY'S!  There are TONS........and i mean TONS of dragonfly's up here at this pond.  Millions and millions.  3 or 4 will land on the top of your pole at one time.  Ever since this "spawning" of them the bass have been jumping out of the water to gobble down these things.  Seems like every second somethings jumping out of the water. Is there a topwater lure that looks like a dragonfly and will it be effective?  I have a problem using light topwaters.  I don't have a light action rod and it's a spinning outfit with 12lb test so gettin it out there is tough, any suggestions for "The One Who Snacks the Dragonfly" ?  Thanks in advance guys!

Ben

tie on 4 lb test leader, about as much as you can cast, tie on a really small hook and put a live dragon fly on it.  Cast it out and hope it floats or sinks really slow.  Dont forget to set your drag to about 1 lb or so.

Disclaimer:  I have never tried this, but if the bass like dragonfies.... go with it.

There are realistic dragonfly lures available in the market:

River2Sea makes them.

Kool looking ain 't them ?

You need them ? Nope

Why I say you don 't need them ? cuz you don 't have to mimic to the last detail how a dragonfly looks in order to fool bass to bite a towater lure, bass ain 't as choosy as trout when it comes to baits. Dragonflies are very common here where I live all you need when there are hundreds of dragonflies is to pick out a popper, any kind of popper ( even though I prefer in such cases a Chug Bug due to it 's slender profile and not much popping ) and you are ready for some fun.

thanks for the tips guys.  see.....i tried some popping yesterday and nothing was hitting at all.  I tried a larger sized one and nothing so i figure ok downsizing would help but the smaller one i have is too light to cast out and just creates a mess of my line.......maybe i can get something in between the 2 sizes.  what are some good colors for really hot clear sky weather?

Color means nothing, presentation and location means everything, choose the color you like, I like metallic finishes because they have flash, and flash plus sound plus vibration are ways to call in the fish.
