Simple question..what brand/type/size hook do you use for worms??

Recommended Posts

Hey all...

With the confusing, crazy, amount of worm hooks out there, I thought it would be interesting to see what most folks use for there worm fishing. I am talking about plain old 7-10 inch plastic worm, let's not EVEN get into the hooks for other creature baits etc.

Chime in!!!!!! :D

Depends a little bit on the bait. I carry about all sizes of Gammys. Mostly offset shank, mostly extra wide gap. If I'm using a big 10" worm, I'll use a 5/0 hook. If I'm using a 5" Senko, I'll use a 3/0 EWG.

I'll go as small as 1/0 when I'm fishing streams for little smallies.

For most soft plastics I use Gamakatsu 4/0 EWG Offset Worm Hooks.

I use EWG Gammies mostly in the following sizes:  3/0 for 5 and 6 inch worms, 3/0 and 4/0 for 7 inch depending on the worm's attributes, and 4/0 or 5/0 for 10 inches and above.

 I can't argue with that.

I don't fish any worms over 7". With that said, I use 3/0 EWG Gammy's for 5" Senkos and 7" *** Hookups. I use 2/0 EWG Gammy's for 4" Senkos and Trick Worms.

Keep it simple.

EWG 3/0 will serve you for most baits and bait sizes, from a 5 inch grub to a 8 inch worm.

That would be the hook I fish and rig the most baits with.

3/0 EWG on anything under 10 inches'

Over 4/0

I carry 3 brands, different Mil Sizes to the wire and different hook weights, when t rigging weightless can alter the drop rate, on some days it can make a difference

OWNER straight shank worm hooks from 1/0-5/0 depending on size plastic used.  I know it is 'old school' but my hook-up ratio went up from off-set hooks.

I am doing a comparison this year. I suspect this may be true for me also, I have to see how this plays out. For now my choice has been EWG, but I noticed , at the end of last year that I was fishing a bit more with the old school worm hooks. I have to see was it because I was using them more, or if compared to EWG, using them both the same if there is a difference in hook ups.

I also use a lot of Owner Straight shank hooks, and size them to my baits.

I was having troubles with hookups on certain baits with EWGs (especailly the beaver style baits), and someone on here made the recommendation to switch. I did, and began landing more fish the next day.

Owners are expensive though, and I picked up a bunch of Strike King Saber Points on close-out at walmart, and have been very pleased with them.

I used to only use 3/0 hooks last year (senkos and other similar baits) but now that I have many more soft palstics to pick from I will also be carrying a supply of 4/0's as well.

I would use 4/0 for 7" and 5/0 for 10".

I've been slowly moving towards Owner old school round bend offset shank hooks for my plastics and seem to have fewer fish get off.

Also hook is closer to bait for more realistic profile. No dropoff in hookups either.

I actually bought some Owner straight shank hooks this Winter for the same reason.  I haven't tried them yet.  It looks like we'll have to have a future thread discussing the comparison.  :D

When using fluorocarbon I saw my hookups increase from the switch from EWG to straight shank. But I found if I switched to braid the hook up ratios were the same. So I switched back to EWG hooks and put braid on all of my rods.

Anyone use the Gam skip gap hook for worms?? 2/0...3/0...

I picked  up a package of the 2/0..3/0..and 4/0 for plastics (Beavers etc.). I tried a worm on the 3/0 and it held it right in place. That's an advantage!!!!
