What to throw

Featured Replies

Hey all,

This weekend I will be fishing my first tournament ever! Exciting for sure (it's just a small tournament maybe a $150 prize). However, I need some help with what to throw.

Here's a lake layout:

A few points, water seems to want to flow slightly towards the southeast, some nice areas where the contour drops pretty rapidly from about 6 to twelve feet. Max depth 36 feet.

Location: Central Iowa (i.e. the bass haven't spawned here yet or are just beginning two)

This is my thinking for my three rods

Baitcaster: Chrome/Black Lipless Ratl-trap (later switch to Chartreuse spinner if Ratltrap doesn't work)

Spinnning 1: Shaky-head worm, trick stick or texas rigged lizard

Spinning 2 (with braid): topwater(maybe temps are supposed to stay near 80 the next three days here). Or possibly crankbaits

What would you guys do or throw? ARe my selections good?

I don 't anticipate what I 'm going to rig until I 'm there, depending upon the water conditions ( water temp, water clarity and so on ) and climatic conditions I select what I 'm going to throw, never before.

As Raul said, too many variables.  Make yourself a go-to box and put the baits you think you might be using in it and keep it handy.

I would lose the braid and go with Mono for topwater and also include a jig for the break you mentioned. Different depth cranks, some soft plastics, some jigs, and a couple spinnerbaits should get you started.

Never forget shakey head worms if bite is really tough. Go with your strengths.
