I have an 05 Merc 30hp 4 stroke and having some problems getting the lower unit off. I was under the assumption that I didnt have to mess with the shift linkage to get it off but it seems to be stuck at the shift linkage. I just want to hear from someone whether I have to take the carbs off to get to the linkage or something easier.

This is my first time doing the impeller myself and trying to learn how to do the "simpler" engine work.

I got the lower unit off. There was a retaining clip with a pin that held the shift linkage in the head. I needed long needle nose pliers to get at it.
