What is the best way to store rods? I know I don't want to lean them up against a wall. Right?

When the weather turns cold enough that I won't be fishing for a while, I'll take the reels off. If I don't have a rod rack/holder, should I find a place to lay them flat? Is that best?

What type of rod rack/holder would you recommend? I'll be close to a BPS late next month and I can pick one up.

During the fishing season I keep my rods in a vertical rod rack in the garage. I considered some of the racks at BPS and the ones that looked nice in the catalogue looked very cheap and over priced in the store. What I did was bought the replacement clips for those racks and built my own out of solid oak that I had leftover from another project.

In the off season I put my good rods in one of those Berkley rod holders, with the reels removed. As for the less expensive rods, I put 2x4s between the floor joists in my basement and slide them up there.

Do the cold weather have any effect on rods? I have some really nice Falcon Rods and I have them stored in tubes in my guest/man-cave/ future baby room. I need to make room for the new addition to my family and I was thinking I could store them in my shed. Any suggestions on how to take care of nice rods during the cold weather season?

I've stored all of my rods in a vertical rack in an unheated shed for years with no ill effects. In the off season, I remove the reels, stuff 'em in old tube socks and store them in a drawer in the same shed. Just be sure to loosen the drag and spool brakes on your reels before storing them.

I use large cup hooks that I have dipped into a Tool Dip (Plasti Dip) to protect the rod tip.

Once I get them dipped then I screw them into the ceiling of the garage/shop or the 2x4's in the basement. Then just hang the rod without the reel (from the tip). I have over a 100 custom rods hung that way with no effect to the tips.

I get a couple of PVC pipe that is long enough and and put them inside. Just get a P.Marker and write what rod is what on the outside. I think this is great for carrying out of town too.
