Jig swapping and alterations.

Featured Replies

Throughout the summer my go to jig for docks and weed pockets had been black/blue or green pumpkin 3/8 wide gap jig.

So far this fall that pattern has changed in a hurry, I have switched to a 5/16 finesse jig in PBJ or a brown / red color combination.  Along with more trimmed off the weed guard.

Curious what everyone else does to their jig arsenal when prepping for fall.  What changes you make, if you downsize jigs or keep them the normal size.  I have not downsized in the past except in very clear water or pressured areas, but so far I have found this downsize has triggered the bite to turn from luke-warm to hot in this colder weather.

I like to add in a shad pattern jig once fall gets here. I typically get more bites on the fall this time of year and also more bites while reeling in and I think the shad pattern jig helps since they key on shad in the fall.

As the weeds dies back, I go to a big football jig. I'm not so picky about color, mostly black and blue, black and purple, and browns.  I use the cast out, drag, bump, and rock in roll retrieve. I like single and double tail grubs, sometimes with a contrasting color. Another option that works is threading a fluke, ribbon tail worm, or small paddle tail swimbait. Its just something bigger. Other times, I can't find a big bait bite, and go to the little "puffball" jigs, no trailer necessary. I did not type "Skinny Bear" in this post, LOL.

I keep my jig sizes pretty much the same year round.  I usually use a 3/8 or 1/2 oz jig with a ragetail lobster or rage craw.  In the fall I work my jig a bit faster than I did in the summer, with big sweeps and hops and a few swims.

In the winter I bring it to a slow crawl, hopping it up and down over   the same branch of a laydown over and over until big mama slams it.  Sometimes in the winter, a trailer with less action can be more effective.  During those times, I use a zoom super chunk or a gycb flappin hog.

It may be more about finding them, then changing lure size. Unless clarity changes.

I like to downsize my jigs. I will usually use a finesse jig, in a natural color ;)
