District 5 biologists recently completed a major stocking effort, releasing roughly 400,000 Florida strain Largemouth Bass into four of our lakes:

  • Lake Chicot: About 250,000
  • Cane Creek: 111,000
  • Lake Wallace: 25,000
  • Lake Wilson: 20,000

We stock Florida strain Largemouth Bass because they have greater genetic potential for larger growth, which is a trait preferred by anglers throughout the state.

We use a "boat stocking" method for these young fish. This lets us place them directly into the best possible habitat—think shallow areas with lots of vegetation and structure. Giving them immediate refuge and a great environment helps them survive and thrive.

In a few years, these fingerlings could become trophy bass, and we're excited about the future of fishing in these lakes.
