Does anyone have experience with getting rid of rust and repainting a gun barrel? I lost my guns during the Joplin tornado and on the 5 month since the tornado I got to pick my .22 rifle up from the police station. Thankfully some citizen turned it in and the police were able to use the registration numbers to track me down. The woods got some scratches, the rear sights broken, and the barrel has minor rust spots from where the paints been chipped off. I used Remington oil all over the gun and it fired a clip smoothly which is amazing. Back to the barrel, can I lightly sand the barrel and repaint it myself? Any tips would be great. I e-mailed the gun manufacturer and they sent back a generic e-mail stating to mail it in and see what the warranty covers which I doubt is damage from an f-5 tornado.

Is the barrel painted or blues? U can re blue it with a kit that costs I think 20 to strip sand and re blue it this would be your cheapest and best way with out sending it out if it's blued. Or u can take a wire brush and some rem oil get the rust out and spray paint it but IMO that ruins guns and makes em look cheesy

Never knew about the blued thing in which it appears to be. Thanks for the info I found some kits and it doesn't look to hard to fix up.

No it's easy just be in a warm work space it takes to the metal better if it's warm iv blued quite a few rifles that were hand me downs or I get them used and they need a touch up. Just never re blue an old gun u plan on selling that may be worth some money I found this out the hard way turning a $500 .22 into a $100 .22

I have tested the brownells epoxy spray cans on one of my military surplus rifles that had a worn muzzle. I used the aluma-hyde II and the preperation is the key to having it come out right. I lightly went over the barrel with 0000 steelwool. Then washed the barrel / area withy rubbing alcohol and heated it with a hair dryer. utting it out in the sun would be ok too. Once its heated i sprayed it. It lasted for over 10+ years now.

You could also cold blue it too using the same process and heat it and blue it. I apply the cold blue with a Q tip and if the bluing won't take to the metal i use the 0000 steelwool with the bluing to work it into the metal. Bill
