  1. Apparently, the tug boat driver lacked a proper liscence. He didn't seem to care. Course, why would that matter when your transporting 400,000 gal of oil. I'm sorry, this crap just makes me sick.
  2. Not gonna bother putting up a link because I'm tech.-challenged, but I thought people would want to know that nearly half a million gallons of oil got dumped in the Mississippi River near New Oreleans, I think yesterday. Very upsetting. Sometimes I feel people just don't care....
  3. You guys call that a crappie, but I call that delicious!
  4. Well that didn't take long. Silva is AMAZING! Course we already knew that. Fedor vs Big Tim is going down. I can;t remember the date. Timmy is scared. A. Silva vs Fedor. Wouldn't that be something. Alas it would never happen....
  5. The riffled heads of holes. Find ones that concentrate the flow into a chute. Two or three feet deep, the faster the current the better. Topwater, worked really fast. Doesn't matter if it's high sun. Find the sweet spot and it's one after another, after another, after another.... Not all chute's are created equal. It must dump into deep enough water. This is probably my most effective summer pattern, used when the water is low and hot, and its also my most fun. I have it down to something of a science. I've told a few people about it and they act like I'm crazy. The guy I've been fishing with lately was skeptical, until the water dropped low enough for me to show him, and he was blown away by it. When the river is low and hot, forget going deep and slow, go shallow and fast.
  6. Never had a full moon do anything for me in freshwater, except for around the spawn. A full moon during the right water temp, photo period, water level, puhes the prespawn/spawn activity in my river into overdrive. Other than that, a full moon means nothing to me Neither does a new moon, or a waxing gibbous, waning gibbous, etc, etc. They all fish the same. If you ask me, Lunar tables, or Solunar tables, or whatever, is a bunch of silly talk. I know, I know, such and such an expert says they do matter, and If I buy his book and subscribe to the website, then I too can benifit from the eerie powers of the moon. No thanks. And Im sure some guys are gonna chime in and say they are all about it, which is cool, I have just yet to be convinced. Saltwater, on the other hand, in my limited experience, seems to be a different story.
  7. Keeping any more than one bass in a an aquarium less then, say, 240 gal. is a bad idea. Keep the bass where they belong, they get TOO big and they eat TOO much. Get a small sunfish. Much smaller , much easier, much prettier, and they behave alot like bass.
  8. How heavy a weight are you using? Beefing it up can't hurt. Hardbaits are good ideas too. I like cranks, but would try a top-water first. A popper with a shallow cup, like a yo zuri zz pop. Pop it real fast across that fast water, and don't be afraid to try this up near the rapid where the water is heavily riffled. Hold on tight.
  9. He's back up huh? Well tell him to sit back down! Had enough of the Brett Farve lovefest whenever the Packers are doing good. He's a good guy and all, but when he's in the playoffs, or close, sports announcers talk about Brett like they want to date him. I've also had enough of the "will he retire" frenzy at the end of every season. He's one of the greats, for sure, but I think its time for him to be put to pasture.
  10. Exactly. I too have a warmwater discharge that I take full advantage of. Plus, the river doesn't fully ice up everywhere, even in NY. Come about august, believe it or not, I start dreaming about winter fishing. Being alone on the river, 28 degrees out, snow falling, big fish on the lurk, I love it. November thru January is one of my favorite times to fish. Oh yeah, and there is also ice fishing! So far my biggest LM this year came through the ice. Got him SUper Bowl Sunday, then m,y Giants won. Heck of a day!
  11. With all that effort, you could learn to play REAL guitar. The groupies would come flocking and it would be "bye bye" sore forearm.
  12. Yes, sometimes, depends on where you are. "Red-Eye" is a local common name for Rock Bass in some parts of the country. Just like some parts of the country call N. Pike "Jackfish", etc, etc.
  13. I always liked the Johnny Cash rendition myself.
  14. I hate WalMart. I hate what they do to local business, the way they bully in to towns that don't want them there, the way they treat their employees, etc etc. But..... If you can find another place where I can buy a pack of Gammie EWGs, a dozen socks, a watermelon, and fish food at 3 AM, I'd like to see it. I try to go only when I NEED to.
  15. How do you know she wouldn't pass a background check? Exactly. Background check or not, pass or fail, that's a person who is obviously not wrapped up tight enough to own a gun. Unfortunately, she did get one, and shot herself and someone else. The only silver lining is that she and her friend are still alive.
  16. Just got channel cattie the other week on a crankbait in fast water while fishin for smallies. Didn't weigh her but probably went 7-8 pounds. Better believe that for the first ten seconds or so, I thought I had a huge smalle. But alas...
  17. I thought they did backround checks before they sold guns..... I guess she slipped through the system. If I were a reponsible gun owner I wouldn't be laughing about this. This is the the kinda crap that gives the gun control folks more ammo. (Pun intended)
  18. IN some ways they're more difficult, in other ways they are not. This is how I would break it down: Finding them: same Getting them to Bite: LM. LM tend to get lock jaw more then SM, who tend to be aggressive almost all the time Landing them when Hooked: SM, without a doubt, are harder to land. Nothing fights (or throws a hook) like a smallie.
  19. My brothers up there working for the summer. Said the salmon just started running, you should check that out.
  20. Nope. Not a redear. Doesn't have the red operculum that is the trademark of the red ear (Lepomis microlophus) : All signs clearly point to Lepomis Cyanellus, or commonly referred to as the green sunfish. And yes, they can get that big.
  21. I wouldn't "figure" anything until I've read the regs. I've heard of guys getting ticketed for accidental shark. Your supposed to cut them off. I don't think you want to flirt with the chance of getting a fine on vacation. If you hook and land a decent size shark in the daytime, it will attract all kinds of unwanted attention, so be sure to check th regs.
  22. I have family in Pawley's Island and Georgetown, which are just a few hours away. Just got interested in the surf the last couple of years though. We used the two and three drop rigs just as you described. Fresh or live bait will always beat the frozen stuff. Get a castnet and learn how to net minnows. Instead of frozen shrimp, by a pound of fresh whole shrimp. You get the idea. You don't have to cast far from the beach. Past the breaking waves is usually too far. Right in the waves is where the fish are. You'd be suprised by what lurks right where everyone swims! Which reminds me, make sure you have polarized sunglasses and walk around the beach, you'll notice things. If you are beach combing, and you happen upon a particularly cloudy patch of water, plunk down your bait in there for awhile. Good things can happen. A pair of binoculars are handy too. Use it too look up and down the beach for diving gulls, bait balls, bluefish blitzes, etc. If you see action like this get on it!. He used to have good luck around rock jetties with red and black drum. I'm pretty sure you can't fish for sharks on shore/pier in Hilton Head, so check your regs before you try anything. I don't think your even supposed to land an accidental shark. I know you're allowed to in Pawleys. If your willing to drive a county or two over, go for a night of sharking. Read up on it and be careful if you do! This is the only time I'll use frozen strips of mullet, but I've heard a live/dead whiting or croaker will do better. I'm no expert on surf fishing by any means but I hope that helps. Ask any questions if you got any, and don't forget the pictures and reports after! Its been a few years since I've been in the Low Country and I miss it.
  23. Green sunfish all the way. The "hybrid wagon" easy easy to jump on, but rarely takes you to the truth. : Green sunfish are not circular like bluegill, they are longetr and more square shaped as you mentioned. Large black spot on second dorsal, green wavy lines on cheek and opercle, dusky bars on side. And finally the real kicker: it was hard to make out, but I can count 9 anal fin rays. DING DING DING we have a winner: Green Sunfish. Thats a big one by the way! Congrats.
