Focus on the reel and whatever rod they match with it as a combination. In your price range, I recommend a Shimano Symetre spinning reel or if you decide to go with a baitcasting rig, the Shimano Citica. 8-)

We've had alot of rain up here the past couple days so water quality may not be at its best.The trib that you are talking about is Oil Creek,been a few years since I have fished it but know of friends that slam smallys w/topwaters,tubes pretty much anything you can think of.

I've had success with rapala skitter props and heddon tiny torpedos 8-)

I gotta go with the topwater smally strike,hell even a 2lber can seem like a monster

I'll put in my 2cnts.Got out Wed. on my local creek around 8am.Spent the first 20 mins.tossing an x-rap around a 200yd stretch of good smally area,no hits :'(Then I noticed some fish sucking stuff from the surface,Switched to a torpedo and BAM game on.That lasted about 45 mn.Tinkered a few more times,finally finishing with an unwieghted 6" wave worm,bite on till noon 8-).Landed 8 smallys,1 20" pike,lost probably twice as many smallys and had 3 trails by pike :)In my opinion not a bad morning,by the way I'm a bank fisher and that day was clear with a high pres.syst.coming thru 8-)So I must agree any day is a good day for fishin just be ready to adapt
