  1. Reel refinishers use an ultrasonic cleaner. Maybe you could try naval jelly?
  2. 6' and 6'6". Longer rods are useless in the backwaters I fish. Ive got a two 7'2" Cumara's I will never use. Cant stand long rods, everybody thinks there is more length but its all in the rear grip. Place a 6'6" and a 7' next to each other and theres only a 1" difference between the rod tip and reel seat.
  3. Big price increase. No anodizing, some proprietary clear coating. Nothing smaller tban the 200 size. All sad news to me.

  5. Things are just getting outrageous. Did you see Shimanos new Symetre and Saros on ***? They look like theyre made by Quantum. These rods look like 2002 Airrus rods.
  6. I dont know, their bass shows arent any better. You got that giggling idiot. Extreme Angler with blaring ghetto music so loud you cant here what he says. WFN is Canadian and bass arent a mainstay species up there by a long shot so I dont think we can expect them to have a majority of bass shows. I used to think those fly fishing posers were so full of themselves but these days it seems the bass tournament "pros" think they are hotter than nascar gods.
  7. I'd bet a good place to start is frequenting forums, sites made for reel repairmen to communicate like alantani.com.
  8. Keep looking on many of those forums, you'll see the new Penns are nothing more than black colored Pfelugers from mother company Pure Fishing. The Conquer has been plagued by severe frame failures and misalignment of its gearing. Tha Slammer and SSg are being phased out and replaced with a model combining both. I imagine it'll be on the frame of the new Revo Inshore Spinning Reel that is coming out at ICAST. Penn from Philly Pa. is long dead and gone.
  9. No pics oldschool............ Im dying to see some good old Ambassadeurs!
  10. Just slipping my CI4's in and out of the flush mount rod holder in my yak, I have cracked the chromed plastic rear body guard. On a 2500 and a 4000 size. A year and a half later Shimano still doesnt have the replacement parts in stock. And I BABY my reels. Not saying the others on you list will last any longer, Im sure they wont. Just good info to know.
  11. Braided line collects sand and salt so I bet it could certainly collect spores.
  12. All the ARB bearing is...is the same bearing with the shield removed. Aint no difference in its ability to thwart salt. Just a gimic I was using those Calcuttas in the salt before they thought up ARB bearings with no difficulty.
  13. Texas inshore guys swear by the Curados even the new ones. Bantam advises it is saltwater safe. That being said, theres good reason why low profile baitcasters arent the norm in most coastal areas. Wind. Its pure misery trying to throw a under 1/4 DOA Shrimp into a 15 or 20mph wind on the flats. You'll even see that wind on the jetty or in plain old bay fishing.
  14. Wolf Fish in Suriname, Dorado in Uruaguay, Capitan in Gabon, New Guinea Bass, Murray Cod in Australia
  15. Its a good point I think. Ive often found dried up fiberous algae on my reels foot, levelwind cover and frame after a day fishing. Also on guides feet. I wouldnt doubt we host some opportunistic exotic life this way.
  16. I dont know about Pa. but here fishing is great after the rain. especially after years of drought. Any place the water is trickling in to poaring into the main body of water is a hotspot. A new food source of washed in bugs brings minnows and bream. Added O2 to attract bass and bait too. In summer rain runoff brings much needed relief lowering hot typical water temp and adds to bass activity.
  17. Those first Lew's were made for them by................ Shimano. That original company named Lew Childre, is long gone into history and the new Lew's is in name only.
  18. I find the line twist and tip wraps using spinning gear more of a hassle than the rare birdsnest in my casting reels. Its the fish that dictate what I use. I'll always prefer to use casting gear, but as local water become more pressured I have to use lighter/smaller lures to find success. So spinning reels get more and more use.
  19. Theres an old saying Skeeter Skelton used to say. Beware the man with but one gun, for he will know how to use it.
  20. Review? You play with a reel at the store after a thousand schmoo's handled it and can give a review? Opinion maybe, review, come on. Lews is like a Pro Qualifier? Absolutely. It is the same reel along with the revos, the Brownings, the Phfeluger, the Banax, the Fox and all the others that asian factory makes. Just like a Mercury is a Ford and Cadi is a Chev with more bling. Sadly the fact is is isnt worth buying, but neither is the Shimano.
  21. Must have been BPS they are notorious for allowing folks to tighten up the drags of the reels they handle and leave them that way. Just so you know often the () beveled washers loose their effectiveness from the same mishandling and have to be replaced. That will effect the upper end of the drags range. All this makes me glad Ive turned back the hands of time and use old Ambassadeurs now.
  22. Thats a seriously carved on reel seat. Very Cool. The stripes......your a brave man
  23. Bad info? Lures flying into oblivion is exactly why braid hasnt gained a foothold with the guys who throw huge swimbaits in California. Or monster poppers to strippers in the New England surf. News2BC4bass, those are great reels in a very comfortable size. I had one and a 1600 Pro Max. You can make those reels a finesse bait thrower or a standard lure reel, they're very versatile.
  24. Braid is not abrasion resistant like so many 'internet experts' acclaim. Its strength comes from its pulling power. But its construction is still basically just twisted fabric and offers little against abrasion. Thats why its never gotten a foothold in deep sea bottom fishing.
  25. I agree Quake. The diameter of the thinnest braids probably blends right in with the various debris in the water and in the background. Ive been using the new power pro 8 in brown for fishing tannin stained rivers with good success. But only on my spinning gear. Im still happier with mono for casting gear but trying to get used to braid. Re spooling mono every month is getting old. Just can decide if for me what I see as braids pitfalls can be outweighed by its convenience.
