  1. Mono backing is a fine idea for running a thin braid that you will likely never exhaust. For reels that will run braid back to the spool metal I'll back them with 3M VHB tape or at least a few wraps of electrical tape for the braid to dig into. 3M VHB tape has a million uses and everybody should have some!
  2. They will be discounted a significant amount, can't disclose anything further.
  3. I fished the curado for about 4 hours today and I think I'm in love. It lives up to the hype and at this price point anybody looking to step up their memecaster should pick one up. I thought the smaller crank would be an issue but it's not. Looking forward to putting it side by side against the Tatula CT 100HS tomorrow.
  4. Bought a Curado I 200HG at Basspro for $133.73 today, that's tax included and the $5.34 it cost to buy a zebco 202 and trade it in for $25 off. For a reel that recently retailed for $179.99 I'd say that's pretty d**n fair. Now I get to see what all this Shimano fuss is all about
  5. I look on ebay and never find a deal that good. What's the secret?
  6. Ultra cheap spinning: abu garcia cardinal sx/pfleuger trion on a berkely cherrywood HD medium heavy (which is much more medium than heavy) - $60-65 A step up: pfleuger president on a berkely lightning shock or similar 40 dollar rod - ~$90 Ugly stiks aren't bad rods but they're too heavy for me. I've got a 6' heavy ugly stick for catfish but that's about all it's good for. Once you get used to fishing lighter rods it's hard to go back. 6'6" is alright but once you go 7' once again it's hard to go back to 6'6". Do compare rods though, one model's 6'6" and one model's 7' might only be 2-3 inches different in reel to tip distance so you need to consider how long the grip is as well.
  7. I bought a vintage 70's model on ebay and I need to recondition it. I find the 80's and 90's models are my favorite.
  8. I bought a new zebco bullet out of curiosity and put 30 lb braid on it, and while it did 'work', it still twisted the line and since the spool does not oscillate up and down the braid ends up digging in on itself and will end your cast abruptly. Not worth $100 for braid HOWEVER it is hands down the best spincast reel ever made. The retreival ratio is excellent. If you were only going to run 10 lbs mono or fluoro it would be a nice reel to play around with. For people who refuse to use anything but spincast, pfleuger makes some decent options, and the abumatic stx is ok too. All modern zebco 33 variants i've used are barely acceptable in build quality and performance.
  9. I bought a Stealth on a quick sale on amazon for $35 and after a few days it's gotten less and less smooth. I took the side cover off and the resistance is definitely coming from the braking side of things as the handle and spool run free without that side plate on. Fully assembled it will stop spinning very quickly. It did not come with any manual, just a parts breakdown. Any ideas what's going on here? Is there some other brake adjustment outside of the dial that I'm overlooking?
  10. Not to hijack the thread but with removing grease comes the part where you put grease back on.....so what to use? I've got a reel that sounds pretty dry and I'm gonna take it apart tomorrow.
  11. I've got 30 and 40 lb braid on all my spinners. Heck I've got 65 lb braid on my old silver max, but that's for punching. I put 15 lb fluoro leaders on most things now because I'm paranoid about fish being line shy, and of course fluoro sinks better. Spend a little extra money for a higher carrier braid i.e. more strands/more round. Sufix 832 is on sale at basspro and after using powerpro and spider stealthbraid, I think I'm gonna stick with the sufix. I'd rather have too much lb test than not enough, but that comes from years of broken mono giving me nightmares about lost fish
  12. I used to run longer leaders but now i just run about 5 feet of 15 lb fluoro with an FG knot and I don't have to worry about the knot going through the reel.
  13. Just got the Tatula CT yesterday and I'm impressed with it so far. If anything the drag setting is harder to change than other external dials, I can't see myself accidentally moving it.
