  1. I haven't heard that either, but it was strange/unexplained coincidence? how Coyotes invaded VA and population exploded in the late 1990's. they are responsible for "SKY CARP" AKA resident CANADA GEESE They released Geese that never learned to migrate. Big mistake yep DGIF they've made a few blunders ?BLUE CATS & CANADA GEESE ? those 2 I'm 100% positive DGIF is responsible for
  2. 8/26/19 Dept of Health issues advisory to stay away from contact Wilcox lake water until further notice https://www.progress-index.com/news/20190826/harmful-algae-blooms-spark-closure-of-wilcox-lake avoid swimming, wading or bathing in the area,” the VDH statement said. “This includes windsurfing and stand-up paddle boarding; any activities which pose a risk of skin contact or accidentally ingesting the water.” I think it applies mostly to swimmers, but I guess it's saying be extra cautious, or you could get a severe case of the trots
  3. DGIF concerned? That does seem foolish What are they concerned about hybridizing with native bass strain? Remember DGIF is responsible for introducing "foreign" blue catfish species and that population has exploded. Blue cats over abundance has something to do with the James not being the great BASS fishery it once was. Snakeheads will be next non-native to take up residence. Remember that the James/Richmond hosted the BASSMASTER Classic for three straight years 1988,1989,1990 "in recent surveys of the tidal James and Rappahannock rivers, they made up 75 percent of the total fish biomass". https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/feature-story/bay-invaders-blue-catfish-fishery
  4. yeah I kinda feel the same about fishing for tidal bass. I've fished Chick Lake much more than I've fished the river. The river has definitely become one of the top bass fisheries in the state.
  5. doesn't get much better than this! sharing this article from http://cvillebuzz.com/author/jim-brewer/ A Day to Remember By Jim Brewer on Aug 15, 2019 03:22 pm Last week, Mark Finley had a day to remember as he fished on the Chickahominy River. His wife was going to join him, but cancelled at the last minute, so he hooked up his bass boat, drove down to the Chick and fished by himself. Mark, who owns Finley’s Service Center in Charlottesville and has been fishing bass tournaments for 30 years, put in at Walker’s Dam, fished for couple hours and couldn’t buy a bite. Then, the wind picked up, the tide picked up and it became overcast. To make matters more difficult, the tide was going hard in one direction and the wind pushing in another. Mark had been fishing grass and lily pads but switched to a jig and started throwing to wood structure. Bang! A 5-pounder, then, another and another. For three hours, it was non-stop action. Mark said he caught 25 bass including at least 5 bass at five-pounds or greater and he didn’t catch a single fish under about 14 inches. His limit of five bass would have weighed around 30 pounds, quite a catch for the Chickahominy River – or anywhere, for that matter. Then, the sun came out, the wind subsided and the red-hot bite ended as quickly as it started. But for three hours, Mark said that it was as good as it gets. Sometimes it pays to be in the right place at the right time. It also pays to be a persistent and
  6. the posted sign regulations didn't say "electric only" but I was assuming that. The sign is a little "vague" in my opinion . I was saying if someone did want launch a bass boat, and only use the trolling motor, I wouldn't advise it. Yep you gotta fish it from a boat, the banks are way too step, although I saw signs of bobber snags along the shoreline Definitely worth a try, I'll be interested to know how you do. good luck my selfy shot was a fail, arm was too short lol
  7. yep it's got a concrete ramp it's kinda short, so I'm not sure I'd take a bass boat there I'd scout the ramp first, before you bring your boat.
  8. Wilcox 8/11 in Petersburg Fished this lake for the 1st time. It's a small (22 acres), clear, and deep lake, but don't overlook it. Fished 2.5 hours, the Bite was slow, managed to catch 3 total. 2 dinks & this 5.5lb hawg (picture below) Lone Star 8/17-18 in Suffolk Also my 1st time fishing this lake Both days I fished the Southern Tract Got double 00 skunked, a little disappointing, but I think it's worth a revisit. First off it's a strange & difficult lake to fish. 25 acres Lake in a series of 5 interconnected lakes. 2 shallow & 3 very deep. The 2 shallow lakes are 50% choked up with Hydrilla. the 3 deep lakes, are ULTRA Gin Clear, and the banks are quick drop offs. I could easily see 8-10 feet down. I tried a bunch of lures Saturday, crankbaits, swimbaits, jerkbaits, topwater I had a few blowups on top but nothing substantial Sunday I brought more deep cranks, and lures, but still nothing I left thinking (d**n those spooky clear water bass) when I return I need to go with lighter line 8lb mono or all Flurocarbon, because 3 of my rods had 12 or 14 lb Mono. also thought maybe a drop shot would work. I've fished clear mountain lakes before and I've usually had more luck at night than during the day. But unfortunately a night bite will remain a mystery, because the park closes at dusk.
