So let me introduce myself seeing as this is my first post here. My name is Greg and I live in North Texas and go to school in North Colorado. I have enjoyed fishing my whole life but have never really had anyone teach me. My dad is not an outdoors man to say the least. For the past few years I have just used some cheap gear catching some bass on local ponds and lakes from the shore. This summer I would love to get more serious into fishing.

There is a very large lake 10 minutes from my house. It is Lake Grapevine. There are tons of little inlets and awesome places to fish…if you have a kayak! Shore fishing can be very tough at the lake because of the amount of growth along the shore lines. I have been restricted to parts of the lake where the fishing isn't so great but I have made due.

So I have been sneaking around this website and have read up on what gear I should use to start out. I'm going to get some 5" senkos and texas rig them up and go at it! Should be a great time.

About the kayak situation; I have a small car with no roof rack. I am also poor as an old dog being a full time student. I am putting a cap at $100 on all my gear (rod/reel, hooks, plastics, and line) and would want to try and find a cheap kayak (under $200 if possible). What is my best bet here? I have been wanting to get a kayak for over a year now but I am not sure if I can mount it on my car (chevy cobalt 2 door). Obviously I am going to try and buy a used kayak but my biggest problem is I have no clue how to mount it.

I don't really care about all the bells and whistles some of those very nice kayaks come with, I just want to float with a rod in my hand. If any of you can give me tips on how to use a kayak with a small car I would appreciate it greatly. Also if you know anyone with a kayak they don't use and wouldn't mind selling I am interested! I just want to get into the sport more!

For your fishing gear, pawn shops are great. I bought all my stuff in them when I was in school, and I liked it so much I still do it. Your best bet will be to shop the ones around the DFW area when you are on breaK. The economy there has put some quality gear in the shops, and all prices are negotiable. A kayak is easy to carry on top of just about anything. Get some rachet straps and a few foam noodles, Get a little creative with the noodles and you have a roof rack. Your best bet for a used kayak is probably going to be craigslist in Colorado.

Awesome that is a really good idea. I'll check out some of the pawn shops. I took a peak on craigslist for a kayak in colorado and they are all white water kayaks! Haha. I'm sure I'll find something though. Thank you!
