Live-Lining Sunnies In Nj

Featured Replies

I got a note that some kids at my local lake were using live sunnies as bait over the weekend. Does anyone know if this is legal or not? I read the NJ Fishing Regulations and it lists what "baitfish" you can legally take, but it doesn't say if you can use other gamefish for bait or not. Hoping someone knows the law on this.

Researching your question, according to the NJ DFW lists the sunfish as a protected species and can't be taken from any waters in the state. I find that interesting bc they are so abundant in most of the ponds and lakes I've fished. But then again, I never really gave sunny's any attention or had the desire to keep one.
