Lake Moomaw

Featured Replies

Can any of you guys tell me about Lake Moomaw?

I have never been there but want to take the boat up for a day of Bassin'. I have heard several things about the lake... clear as crystal.... cold and deep... basically people saying that this is just a beautiful lake. I have also heard that, due to the cold nature of the lake, the bass have not spawned yet.

So... is it clear and cold?

Have the bass spawned on Moomaw yet?

Where do I put in the boat?

Where do i fish?

Anything you guys can tell me would be great.

It is for the most part clear, as far as cold, I do not know what the water temp is at this current time, it is however wrapped in a blanket of mountains, and most likely going to impress you with the scenery there.

The spawn should be happening right about now or it could already be over with all of the warm weather we have had this year.

As far as where you put in at, I would suggest the campground side, I have been by the one at the other end of the lake while seeing it by boat, but they say it's a rather narrow road you have to travel to get to it, I am not sure I have never launched from that one.

The North end of the lake has some pretty good fishing up toward the bridge, but there are some other great spots as you travel South.

From the boat launch that I am referring too, if you stand at the top and look left, that will be North, it will take you toward the bridge that I mentioned, be careful going that direction, it gets shallow in a hurry in several areas, as you come out of there and head South, stay to the right until the lake opens up, once it does, you will see an island off to your right, stay left of the island and it will lead you to the South part of the lake, the waterway will pinch into a narrow passage, there will be about a 150 foot rock wall on your left, and another small island in front of you, stay to your left, NOTE: boats will at times not slow down as they come through there so use caution if there is already a boat fishing or parked there it could get a little tight, once you get toward the back, there are numberous coves that have trees to fish around, these trees are only the tops of them, you will be 15 to 20 yards off of the bank, but in 50 to 75 feet of water.

I have seen pods of carp on the suface this time of year, watch out for them too !!

It is a great place to visit, I am sure you will love the landscape.

Have Fun and be safe !!!
