Walking The Frog

Featured Replies

I know "Walking the Frog" is a good retrieval method for fishing soft body hollow frogs. However there are those of us that sit down when we fish, from Canoes and Kayaks,so making a bait walk isnt an option due to stability issues of the watercraft we are in. I've never tried walking a bait sitting down, but I can bet its pretty difficult.

Are frogs just as deadly being twitched across the mats as they are being walked?

Yes, I've had success when I've dragged the frog 3-6 inches at a time. When you think about it, that's actually a more natural frog movement than walking it.

That being said, I know some people who are really good at walking baits with their rod tips up. I can't do it well myself, but I think you should give it a try since you can do it while sitting down.

I twitch frogs on the mats and walk them in open water next to or between mats. For heavy mats I wrap lead wire around the hook shank and stuff in a couple of rattles as well. I feel that a heavier frog makes more of a disturbance on the mat and gets more blow ups.
