Chatterbaits

Featured Replies

Hey Guys,

ive been watching lots of videos lately of guys catching bass on chatterbaits. i've never fished them or even seen this type of lure before. so i picked up a couple in natural, chart, and dark colors to try out, as well as various trailers. but i'm not to sure on how to fish them the correct way. do you slow retrieve? hop it like a jig? burn it fast on retrieve?

also, when is the best time of day to throw this lure?

thanks guys!

I see the chatter bait as an alternative to a spinnerbait and that's how I fish it. Any retrieve you can do with a spinnerbait you can do with a chatter bait. Most of the time I use a slow roll type of retrieve.

I see I see... What's the advantage of a chatterbait over a Spinnerbait or vice versa if they are both so similar lures?

Chatter baits creat lots more distubance in the water and will call fish from further away. They are great for fishing in the grass as the vibrations will clear your bait and keep it from getting so bogged down. One of my fishing buddies uses Ch Baits almost exclusiively and is regularly in the top 5 for club tournaments.

One thing about them though, they are wood magnets - if you throw them nead wood or a brush pile you can pretty much kiss it good-bye.

As for the retrieve - there are two that I have found to work - 1) a slow, steady retrieve will keep it just below the surface like a spinner bait; 2) the "pull and drop" - give it a pull, let it drop and reel up the slack (this seems to work best early in the year). They are not for deep water but they can be deadly in water out to about 6 -8 feet.

Wow thanks for the post! Great info that I didn't know

A super fluke is a great trailer, you can use swimbaits as trailers as well. A chatterbait can be a nice follow up to a spinnerbait, and can be excellent in high pressure situations.
